Ciaran Edward James McGovern (born June 5, 1989 in Grande Prairie ) is a Canadian volleyball player .

Career

McGovern began his athletic career at Christian High School in Calgary . He had his first international assignments as captain of the Canadian youth national team. In 2007 he won the National Team Challenge Cup with Team Alberta. He then began his studies at the University of Calgary and played there in the University team Calgary Dinos. In 2008 he took part in the NORCECA championship in San Salvador with the junior national team. He won the silver medal and received an individual award for best setter of the tournament. The following year he reached tenth place with the juniors at the Junior World Championships in Pune . In 2010 McGovern won the CIS National Championship with the Calgary Dinos . In the same year he made his debut in the senior national team . In the summer of 2012, the player, who also has an EU passport due to his Irish ancestors , took part in the world league with Canada and took twelfth place. He then left his home country and moved to the Slovenian first division club Go Volley Nova Gorica . There he was the best player in the league on serve. From 2013 to 2015 he played for the German Bundesliga club evivo / SWD Powervolleys Düren .
