The Himmelbjerget (German: Himmelberg ) is a 147 m high hill in Denmark between the places Ry and Silkeborg . Until more precise land surveys in 1847, it was considered the highest point in Denmark. Its summit is a popular destination because of the beautiful view over Lake Julsø (Danish: Julsø).
The 25 m high observation tower was built in 1874/75 according to plans by LP Fenger and dedicated to King Friedrich VII , who gave the country a modern, democratic constitution ( Basic Law ) in 1849 . The medallions with portrait reliefs of the king and the honor wreaths were added in 1891.
In the immediate vicinity, memorial stones commemorate the poet Steen Steensen Blicher , war minister and reform politician Anton Frederik Tscherning , narrator Leopold Budde and Vilhelm Beck, chairman of the Inner Mission of the Danish Church. It also commemorates the introduction of women's suffrage in Denmark in 1915.
