Jochen Missfeldt (born January 26, 1941 in Satrup , Schleswig-Flensburg district) is a German writer and journalist . His work includes poems, short stories, novels and a biography of Theodor Storm . He wrote articles for various German daily newspapers and shot the television film Überflug for NDR .

Life

After graduating from high school, Jochen Missfeldt joined the Bundeswehr in 1961 and was trained as a pilot in Uetersen (Schleswig-Holstein) and Phoenix (USA). Until 1982 he served in the Air Force , for the longest time as a pilot, first on the Lockheed F-104 , the "Starfighter", and later on the McDonnell F-4 , the "Phantom". Most recently he was lieutenant colonel and squadron captain in the reconnaissance wing 52 in Leck. At the age of 41 he was retired, as was the custom for jet aircraft pilots at the time. After his retirement he studied musicology , philosophy and folklore in Munich and Kiel. Since 1985 he has been a freelance writer and contributor to various newspapers. In 1998/99 he was a scholarship holder at Künstlerhof Schreyahn , 1999/2000 at the International Artists' House Villa Concordia in Bamberg, and in 2009 he was guest of honor for two months at the Deutsche Akademie Rome Villa Massimo . He is a member of the PEN Center Germany .

In his literary work Missfeldt draws time and again from his experiences as a pilot in the air force. While he was still in the army, he published a volume of poetry with the title Collected Fears (1975), which an officer did not expect .

This was followed in 1977 by the TV film Überflug and, after another volume of poetry, two collections of stories from the aviation environment, Between Above Between Below and Capo Frasca and other aviator stories .

His final breakthrough came with his novel Solsbüll , a family story spanning three generations with strongly autobiographical features. The action takes place in a fictional location in the north of Schleswig-Holstein. Everything that characterizes his later works can be found in this book: the combination of (Schleswig-Holstein) landscape and (German) history, of poetic descriptions of nature and grotesquely parody-like scenes, of precisely and soberly observed everyday reality and surreal dream sequences, of terse, distant language mixed with colloquial expressions and lyrical insertions. The place Solsbüll and Gustav Hasse, Missfeldt's alter ego, reappear in the complex novel Mirrored Heaven , for which he received the Wilhelm Raabe Prize in 2002 .

In his novel, cliffs , the narrator bears autobiographical, again diving elements of the landscape and history of Solsbüll and Mirrored sky on.

In addition to his narrative work, Missfeldt writes reports, especially on aviation topics. Part of this is summarized in the volume Come Time, Come Space (2012). In these texts, too, Missfeldt is not concerned with the mere reproduction of facts and processes, rather the focus is always on the person who deals with them and their experiences. Here, too, the author combines a brief, precise technical language with brief and poetic descriptions of nature.

Missfeldt's affinity for music is shown by his “opera plays”, which, under the cover name Orpheus, bring together contributions for the programs of the Bavarian State Opera.

In 2013 his comprehensive Storm biography was published, which was positively received by the critics.

In collaboration with the painters Klaus Fußmann and Friedel Anderson, the volumes Schleiland (2012) and Wiedergänger were published . Another story from Sylt (2015). In the first, Missfeldt combines the history, cultural history and landscape of the Schlei region with very personal memories and fantastic sprinkles in three essays. Revenant tells the story of Gregor, a kind of mentor to the first-person narrator, who is interwoven in many ways with contemporary history and the history of the island.

In 2017 Rowohlt Verlag brought out two novels by Missfeldt: a revised edition of Solsbüll and Sturm und Stille . After his comprehensive Storm biography, Missfeldt wrote a largely fictional autobiography of Storm's second wife Dorothea.

TV movie

  • Overflight . NDR, 1977.

In the film overflight , a typical flight with a Phantom RF-4E from the air base of the reconnaissance wing 52 in Leck to the air base of the reconnaissance wing 51 (retired) in Bremgarten was documented. The distance was covered in around 50 minutes. The special thing about the documentation style were the many stories on the ground. All narrative threads had in common that at some point the phantom reconnaissance planes from this formation (mostly) flew low overhead and disappeared from their lives in seconds. It was switched over and over between the perspective of the pilot and the people on the ground.
