The Hotel Seewarte is a cultural monument in Flensburg - Mürwik , which was built at the beginning of the 20th century at the intersection of Blücherstraße - Swinemünder Straße / Mürwiker Straße . The old Mürwiker center , where the Seewarte building complex is located, is colloquially referred to as an area “at the Seewarte” due to the city's fame .

background

It is unclear how it was named as a sea observation point. a former naval control room of the Imperial Navy for weather observation is just as conceivable as the simple designation as a vantage point with a particularly attractive and wide view over the Baltic Sea . The hotel was built in 1906 as Mürwik's third hotel on the corner property at the Klosterholz intersection, based on plans by the Flensburg architect Karl Bernt . As early as 1908, the building was apparently expanded to include restoration rooms , a concert hall, a bowling alley and stables. The building of the Seewarte illustrates the building boom that was triggered by the settlement of the Imperial Navy in this area at the beginning of the 20th century. The Seewarte is characterized by a number of picturesque architectural elements, for example the outside staircase that leads to the entrance area or the half-timbered elements on the north side . The tower, however, is its original sharp today spire robbed.

When the Seewarte was built, the Mürwiker area there was not yet part of the city of Flensburg. The construction of a road to Mürwik was an important part of the negotiations on incorporation at the time. The contract between the city and the municipality of Twedter Holz stated with regard to the conditions for incorporation: “The extended municipality undertakes [...] to build the 14 m wide road from Flensburg to Mürwik within two years of the law coming into force to continue to Hotel Seewarte, to connect Hotel Seewarte and Osbekhof by a road leading as straight as possible over Frau Iwersen's paddock with a delimited footpath. ” The incorporation was completed in 1910. After the new building on Kaiser-Wilhelm-Strasse , the building complex was assigned the numbers 154 and 156.

Not much is known about the first owners of the Seewarte. The hotel apparently initially served as an excursion restaurant and hotel for the naval officers and their families. In 1940 the Mürwiker Park-Lichtspiele cinema, mostly Pali for short, was set up in the hall wing on Blücherstraße. After the Second World War , the street was renamed and the building complex was given the addresses Mürwiker Straße 154 and 156. In 1955 the hotel building complex was taken over by the current owners, the Luig family. For almost 40 years Eugen Luig ran the “Supergrill” snack bar on the north side of the Seewarte, which was nicknamed “Schlammi”. According to his information, Eugen Luig sold the “best pizza in Flensburg” and the “best currywurst in the world”. His customers included many marines from the neighboring base . The Pali cinema was located at the Hotel Seewarte until the 1980s. From the 1970s to the 1980s there was also a discotheque in the Seewarte , the audience of which consisted largely of marines. The soldiers' home Flensburg-Mürwik in Kielseng with an alternative offer was only set up in the years 1980 to 1983. For many years a supermarket of the Netto Marken-Discount chain was located in the cinema hall of the Seewarte . The Polish specialty store Marek has been located in the former cinema since 2013. which was previously found on a lower floor of the sea observation tower. In the same year, Bettina Bastian from Flensburg set up the Bastians Currywurst & Meer snack bar in the Seewarte. On their menu, the "best burgers in town" are offered, which are made from regional ingredients. Bettina Bastian has also been running the Solitüde beach pavilion under the name Bastians Bistro since 2016 . The hotel of the Seewarte is still in operation.
