The Krusau-Tunneltal ( Danish Kruså Tunneldal ) is a landscape area in the Schleswig-Flensburg district in Schleswig-Holstein . The area is north of Flensburg on the German-Danish border . It covers a large part of the community Harrislee on the German side and a large part of Bov ( German  construction ) on the Danish side .

description

The Krusau tunnel valley runs about seven kilometers from Padborg to the Flensburg Fjord . On the German side, parts of Harrislee , Niehuus , Karlsberg , the customs settlement , copper mill and parts of Wasserleben belong to it. On the Danish side it includes Kruså ( German  Krusau ) and Padborg.

There is evidence that the valley was formed during the last ice age . The most important feature here is the Krusau , a small river that flows through the Niehuuser See and the Mühlensee in Krusau. The course of the valley is characterized by steep slopes and numerous springs. It is characterized by a gentle hilly landscape with alder forest and willow bushes . The valley floor is very moist and rich in nutrients. There are also agricultural pastures available.

The German-Danish border runs along the tunnel valley.

Protected areas

A large part of the landscape is designated as a landscape protection area and FFH area.

Landscape protection area Kupfermühle-Niehuus

The 557.33 hectare landscape protection area Kupfermühle-Niehuus was designated as a landscape protection area by ordinance on March 31, 1967.

A small part in the east belongs to the FFH area, which is largely in the Baltic Sea, coastal areas of the Flensburg Fjord from Flensburg to Geltinger Birk .

Others

Part of the tunnel valley is the Klueser Forest , which with its recreational forest offers visitors a wide range of opportunities for local recreation. A comprehensive educational trail was created to bring the special features of the tunnel valley closer to interested walkers. The Kollunder Forest is also located in the tunnel valley. The hilly landscape of Niehuus is popularly known as the Niehuuser Alps .

Interreg project Krusau tunnel valley

From 2003 to 2006 the Krusau tunnel valley was preserved and upgraded in a German-Danish project. A wide variety of measures were taken for this purpose, for example a forest meadow that was previously used for agriculture was renatured. The water quality could be improved and new biotopes such as spawning pools could be created.

On the Danish side, the Sønderjyllands Amt worked on this project, while the Foundation for Nature Conservation Schleswig-Holstein in Germany was involved. Both sides involved the various ministries, who thus had their share in the protective measures.
