Summer beech forest in Schleswig-Holstein in Noer on the Eckernförde Bay (2010)

The Schleswig-Holstein State Forests (SHLF) are a public company that manages forests in the German state of Schleswig-Holstein and works to maintain and increase biodiversity , water , climate and noise protection as well as preserving the recreational functions of the forest. The Schleswig-Holstein State Forests look after almost 50,000 hectares of the 173,412 hectares of Schleswig-Holstein's forest area.

organization

Headquarters of the Schleswig-Holstein State Forests (2008)

With the establishment of the Schleswig-Holstein State Forests on January 1st, 2008, the traditional forest administration was transformed into a public company. The Schleswig-Holstein State Parliament had decided on December 12, 2007 with the "Law on the Schleswig-Holstein State Forests Establishment and Amending Other Regulations". The company's headquarters are in Neumünster . The business areas are wood and services, hunting and game, public welfare as well as biological and technical production. In 2019 there were 32 forest districts . The state forests include the Trappenkamp adventure forest and the youth forest homes in Süderlügum and Hartenholm .

On April 18, 2018, the SHLF celebrated its tenth anniversary. To celebrate the day, the employees of the Landesforsten and their guests planted the first trees for a two-hectare anniversary forest.

"Our forest management"

The forest management instructions of the Schleswig-Holstein State Forests form the framework for the annual economic planning. Important milestones are set out in detail in the forest management system up to 2021. In the forests of the SHLF, each hectare of forest area accounts for an average of around 326 solid cubic meters . With a planned sustainable use of 75 percent of the ongoing wood growth, the wood supply increases by 110,000 cubic meters per year.

The Schleswig-Holstein State Forests are pooling their plans for forest management under the motto “Our forest management”. The aim is to maintain the highest possible proportion of diversely structured, efficient and resistant mixed forests on the area managed by the state forests . These mixed forests contribute to the protection of species and biotopes and at the same time form a stable income base for the company.

With the international education campaign " Education for Sustainable Development ", the state forests are strengthening awareness of the values of the forest and the interrelationships of nature. In dialogue with forest users and forest visitors, the state forests develop concepts for a future-proof forest.

The Schleswig-Holstein State Forests manage the forests entrusted to them sustainably and close to nature according to strict ecological and social standards. The company is certified according to the criteria of the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC-C010535). The FSC seal guarantees, among other things, the long-term use of the forest, the protection of natural resources and respect for employee rights.

The state forests document their commitment to an integrative concept that combines ecological, social and economic aspects with the PEFC seal .

natural reserve

In the forestry departments of the SHLF, nature conservation measures are an integral part of the work. The company is also involved in a number of individual projects, for example as part of the “Holstein Habitat Corridors” testing and development project funded by the Federal Ministry for the Environment , or protection projects for sea eagles, black storks, bats and dormice.

The state forests work together with the "Project Group Sea Eagle Protection", which has been campaigning for the protection of sea eagles and other large birds in the forest since 1968. In addition to the SHLF, the project group includes various nature conservation associations, the state hunters' association, the forest owners association and the Ministry of the Environment. The association has been a recognized non-profit association since 1997 and has since carried out the sea eagle species protection project on behalf of the state of Schleswig-Holstein.

Around 30 percent of the forest areas in Schleswig-Holstein's state forests are subject to the Fauna-Flora-Habitat Directive . In these areas, management takes place according to particularly strict rules. Even stricter regulations apply in the approximately 4,800 hectares of natural forests. You are completely excluded from use. On the remaining areas, very old and structurally rich trees are protected by the habitat tree concept, they remain in the forest until natural decay.

Ecopoints

In the course of the natural forest designation in 2016, the Schleswig-Holstein State Forests were able to set up eco-accounts on the newly created natural forest areas . Ecological revaluation measures can now be converted into ecopoints and posted to these accounts. The state forests provide compensation in advance, which can be debited from the points account in the event of a later intervention in nature, for example in the case of a construction project. Builders can use areas that are linked to an eco-account as compensation areas by acquiring eco-points.

An overview map with all available eco-accounts is available on the Schleswig-Holstein State Forests website.

The concentration on selected areas makes it possible to compensate for interventions in nature with higher-quality measures to create and stabilize diverse natural habitats. With this improvement in quality compared to conventional compensation areas, demanding development concepts for species and biotope protection can be implemented. The state forests and the responsible lower nature conservation authorities are responsible for monitoring the defined development goals.

Forest education

Forest pedagogy at the Schleswig-Holstein State Forests

In addition to nature conservation and the training of forest managers, forest education is one of the services of the Schleswig-Holstein state forests. The company's activities in this area focus on the youth forest homes in Hartenholm and Süderlügum as well as on the Trappenkamp adventure forest . The SHLF Forest Education Centers contribute to environmental education with a series of public events, seminars, guided tours and training courses. The ErlebnisWald Trappenkamp is certified as an education center, and prospective forest educators can acquire the federal forest pedagogy certificate there. The " Education for Sustainable Development " promoted by the state forests sensitizes for the interrelationships in nature and for the need to preserve the highly complex forest ecosystem . At the same time, it is intended to help develop social skills and internalize the responsible use of resources.
