Location of the Handewitt colony in Schleswig-Holstein

Handewitt Colony ( Danish : Hanved Koloni ) is a district of the municipality of Handewitt , which is partly also called Handwittfeld (Danish: Hanvedmark ).

location

The houses and courtyards of the district are all connected by the 5.5-kilometer-long street Kolonie . The street Kolonie begins directly at the main town of the municipality. The road initially runs 2.5 kilometers south and connects the first scattered farmsteads with each other. One kilometer before Christiansheide the road reaches a densely populated settlement area with numerous courtyards and buildings. There the road splits in two directions ( location ). The neighboring municipality of Meyn can be reached after two kilometers via its western course there . On the other hand, Christiansheide can be reached after one kilometer via its southern course there.

history

From 1761, King Friedrich V had sparsely populated heather and moorland areas on the Schleswigschen Gest colonized by people from Palatinate and Hesse . In 1761/62 five colonist positions were also set up in the 50.4 hectare Handwittfeld. The individual colonist sites each received around 10 hectares of heather and moorland to be cultivated, the cultivation of which was a difficult task. The neighboring Christiansheide was created in the same way.

The area with its houses and farms was already marked on the map of the Prussian land survey around 1879 . The name of the place was Handewittfeld on the map at that time. It is unclear when the street colony and the hamlet of Handewitt-Kolonie received their current official names. Nowadays there are seventeen house numbers on Kolonie Street.

Tell about the call at the window

A legend reports that one night a farmer, whose farm was in Handewittfeld, heard someone come to his window, knock and start calling for him. But when he got up and looked, there was no one there. A few days later, at the same hour, someone went to the window again and began knocking and calling for him in the same way. When the farmer looked this time, his neighbor was standing in front of him, who asked for help because his son had just had an accident. The legend sums this up with the words: "Even those who are not afflicted with the gift of clairvoyance can receive omens of death unnoticed".
