The director John Hanau , who had just come to the GDR from London, and the actor Heinz Gies from the Berliner Volksbühne founded a touring stage in East Berlin in 1957 with the title Gastspielbühne Berliner Theater . The company had neither a permanent ensemble, nor was a permanent house available. It was played wherever the opportunity arose, and the actors were each hired for a production . John Hanau brought the idea for this with him from his work in London, where this type of theater was the norm.
The opening premiere took place on January 15, 1957 with the play The Diary of Anne Frank by the American playwright couple Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett in the culture house of the Berlin cable company Oberspree . Participants in this performance, directed by John Hanau, were: Florentine von Tautphoeus, Aenne Bruck , Wolfgang Künzel, Hans-Albert Martens , Ellinor Vogel , Walter Richter-Reinick , Franz Arzdorf , Erika Stiska , Günther Polensen and Katharina Herberg in their first role drama school as Anne Frank. The piece saw over 100 performances throughout the GDR. When the following production was performed, the group only called itself Gastspielbühne Berlin .
In an article in Neues Deutschland it was pointed out that the stage was busy with the performance of “Ich bin schuldig” by Hans Müncheberg and Wolfgang Luderer and was preparing a play by Arnold Zweig about Maria Theresa , which the poet had entrusted to the ensemble. No evidence could be found for the realization of these productions. Intendant Heinz Gies had left for the Federal Republic in 1959 . Since then, the guest theater in Berlin has not been mentioned in the newspapers, so that one can conclude that it has been dissolved.
