Heinrich Gies

Heinrich "Heinz" Gies (born June 22, 1912 in Siegburg , North Rhine-Westphalia ; † April 26, 1973 in Hanover , Lower Saxony ) was a German actor and theater director .

Life

Heinrich "Heinz" Gies was born in Siegburg as the son of the master precision mechanic Wilhelm Gies and Barbara Gies (née Gorissen). After studying German and art history, he learned the profession of actor a. a. in Bochum with Saladin Schmitt , the then director of the Schauspielhaus Bochum , whom he described as his "greatest artistic teacher". He received his first engagement in 1940 at the Meininger Theater and also worked in Fürth.

After returning from the Second World War, he came to the Städtische Bühnen Ulm , where, as a young director, he mainly played the major roles in classical theater literature (e.g. “Macbeth” and “Hamlet”). Further engagements led Heinrich Gies u. a. to Giessen and Leipzig.

From 1952 the focus of his work was Berlin. Initially he worked on various Berlin theaters, such as B. at the theater of friendship and at the Volksbühne , and took over the management of the guest theater in Berlin until 1958 .

First roles in DEFA and German TV broadcasting (DFF) films , a. a. in The Vicious Circle and The Captain of Cologne , were the beginning of a lifelong career as a film actor. But he continued to work in theater productions. His preference was for the classics.

Heinrich Gies left the GDR at the end of the 1950s and moved to the West. There he played u. a. at the side of Rudolf Platte in Der Kaiser vom Alexanderplatz at the Theater des Westens , and worked in various theater productions at the Hebbeltheater , Schaubühne am Halleschen Ufer and the former Hansa-Theater .

As a character actor, he played in films such as Die Revolution dismisses their children and Der Transport (with Hannes Messemer ) as well as in various crime films (e.g. Sherlock Holmes and the collar of death or in the film adaptation of Edgar Wallace's Der Zinker ) , also in TV series (including Förster Horn and Police Radio calls ). He worked u. a. with directors like Carl Balhaus , Martin Hellberg , Helmut Käutner , Jürgen Roland , Alfred Vohrer , Rolf von Sydow , Erik Ode . He played his last film role in the short film Strik bei Piper & Silz in 1972 .

In addition to his work as a film actor, he repeatedly took on roles in the theater. a. at stages in Osnabrück, Kassel and Lüneburg. His last engagement of several years took him to the Landestheater Hannover , where he met the former dancer and make-up artist Ottilie Gies and got married in 1971.

Heinrich Gies died after a stage appearance on April 26, 1973 of the consequences of a heart attack. Daughter Martina came from his first marriage.
