Carl Ballhaus , also Balhaus (born November 4, 1905 in Mülheim an der Ruhr , † July 30, 1968 in Eisenach ) was a German actor , screenwriter , director and theater manager .

Life

In 1923, after passing the Abitur , Ballhaus began studying philology and German . Parallel to his studies, he took acting lessons at the Deutsches Theater , where he made his debut in small roles on stage. Head director Erwin Piscator engaged him in 1926 for his ensemble at the Volksbühne Berlin , where he worked with many well-known theater directors until 1935.

He made his screen debut in the silent film Ramper, the animal man from 1926, where he was seen in a small role. Some classic silent films and early sound films followed, such as The Blue Angel from 1930. Ballhaus’s political involvement as an active union member brought him - with the seizure of power by the National Socialists - restrictions on his work as an actor. During the Nazi dictatorship, he only got smaller roles in German film productions and theater stages.

After the end of the Second World War , Ballhaus initially worked as a director for the Munich radio station before he worked as a theater director in Coburg, Düsseldorf, Heidelberg, Bamberg and Dresden from 1946 to 1949. In Dresden he was appointed senior director of the State Theater when DEFA director Martin Hellberg brought him to Potsdam as assistant director for the film Der Ochse von Kulm . He also made his directorial debut at DEFA, where he directed six feature films and occasionally appeared in supporting roles. The film The Vicious Circle from 1956 is now considered to be his most famous work. The project to film Henrik Ibsen's Ghosts with Klaus Kinski failed because DEFA could not pay the royalties. From 1964 until his death in 1968, Carl Ballhaus was the director of the State Theater in Eisenach.

Ballhaus was married to the dancer Almut Dorowa. He is the father of the actor Christian Ballhaus and the brother of the director and actor Oskar Ballhaus , founder of the Franconian Theater , and uncle of the Hollywood cameraman Michael Ballhaus .
