The Wälsebachtalbrücke is a 721.2 m long double-track railway overpass structure on the high-speed line Hanover – Würzburg at distance kilometers 198.2.

Location and course

The village of Kirchheim with the Wälsebachtal bridge in the background

The arch bridge is located near Kirchheim in East Hesse and spans a valley with the Wälsebach and the state road L 3159, which connects Kirchheim with the northeastern district of Reckerode , at a maximum height of 40 m above ground .

The gradient slopes continuously to the south on the bridge. The layout of the route in the bridge area is curved and has a radius of 5100 m.

The Autobahn 7 runs in the immediate vicinity, and the railway line in the Krämerskuppetunnel passes under it.

history

The structure was erected between May 1986 and August 1988 at a cost of around 33 million Deutschmarks.

Due to a subsoil with chimneys due to the weathering of the solution in the red sandstone ( sinkhole area ), no pure girder bridge was used. At the southern and northern end of the structure, a sinkhole was spanned with a hollow beam as a foundation. The middle of the bridge has a chain of four arched bridges, each with a span of 127.5 m, which cross two further chimneys. The superstructure is elevated with reinforced concrete pillars on the arches. The superstructure consists of a chain of 28 single-span girders . This enables individual bridge segments to be replaced later. The cross-sectional shape is a single-cell reinforced concrete box with inclined webs, prestressed in the longitudinal direction . In addition, the deck is prestressed in the transverse direction. With a superstructure width of 14.3 m, the total span is 3 × 27.9 m + 2 × 25.5 m + 4 × (5 × 25.5 m = 127.5 m) + 3 × 25.5 m = 721, 2 m.

In the planning phase, the bridge was in planning section 15 of the central section of the new line.
