Gehau is a district of Breitenbach am Herzberg in the eastern Hessian district of Hersfeld-Rotenburg .
The village with 182 inhabitants also includes the Forsthaus am Hain and Hof Huhnstadt, about two kilometers to the west.
geography
Gehau is located in Knüll on federal highway 62 , right on the border of the Hersfeld-Rotenburg district with the Vogelsberg district . It is about three kilometers to Breitenbach in the east; the closest town to the west is Alsfeld-Lingelbach . The federal motorway 5 is about a kilometer away to the north.
history
Not far from the village in a south-westerly direction is Herzberg Castle , now a partially restored castle ruin. In 1434 Gehau belonged to the Breitenbach court.
On August 1, 1972, Gehau was incorporated into the municipality of Breitenbach am Herzberg together with the municipality of Machtlos as part of the regional reform in Hesse .
Attractions
Between the town of Gehau and the Forsthaus am Hain there is a whole milestone made of natural sandstone in good condition, which indicates the distance to Kassel and Hersfeld. This also means that Gehau is on an old trade route.
North-west of Gehau is the Wilder Stein natural monument , a boulder that is said to be a cold volcano.
In Gehau there are many half-timbered houses that are very well preserved and are listed.
