Maua is a district of the university town of Jena in Thuringia .

location

The district is located south of the city of Jena and directly south at the junction of the federal highway 88 to the federal highway 4 in the Saaleniederung west of the Saale. The village is divided into upper and lower villages. The federal highway 88 divides the place.

history

The village already existed in the 13th century. Wolfgang Kahl researched in UB I 8 of the city of Jena for Maua (Mowe) the 24th July 1259 as the day of the first mention. The oldest tradition from court owners comes from the period 1421–1425. The upper village was only built during the Second World War and consisted of accommodation for the people who had lost their homes.

The watermill in the Leutratal was first mentioned in 1517. It was owned by the Letsch family for 14 generations until 1976. In 1783 Goethe visited the mill.

On May 29, 1613, the day of the Thuringian Flood , the village lost 26 people; 16 houses were destroyed.

On October 11, 1806, 4 days before the battle with Napoleon , a regiment of Prussian hussars returned from the battle near Saalfeld . 40–60 men were quartered in each house in the village. 108 sheep were slaughtered in the village that day.

The Saale flows on the eastern edge of the village . At Maua the Leutra brook , which has its source at Milda , flows into the Saale.

The 3.36 km² large town was incorporated into Jena in 1994.

Attractions

St. Laurence
  • Church of St. Laurentius : A Romanesque predecessor church was destroyed in 1450 in the Saxon Civil War. In 1468 the choir was built and the nave was restored using the remains. In 1640 the church was damaged in a village fire during the Thirty Years' War and was then rebuilt. In 1819 the interior of the nave was renovated, and double galleries and a pulpit altar were installed (colored in 1934). Rare: Baroque percussion on the roof.
