Leutra is a district of the university city of Jena in Thuringia , south of the federal highway 4 .

geography

Leutra is in the immediate vicinity of the Leutratal nature reserve and the federal motorway 4 , which separates it from Jena. With the construction of the Jagdberg tunnel and the dismantling of the previous section of the motorway, its course has no longer been directly adjacent to the site since 2014, and the area, especially the flora and fauna of the Leutra Valley, has been relieved. The former route has been renatured since 2016.

history

The place was first mentioned in documents in 1348. The name Leutra is derived from the stream of the same name, which flows through the Leutratal and is home to brown trout . The word Leutra is derived from the Middle High German Liudraha ( pure water ). In the 14th century, both leutra (lower and upper leutra) came under the Wettin administration. They belonged to the Burgau office. The oldest tradition from court owners comes from the period 1421–1425. On May 29, 1613, after a major storm, the so-called Thuringian Flood , the Leutratal fell victim to a violent flood, which only a few residents survived. In June 1937, construction workers came across structural remains of a farmhouse in the medieval desert of Niederleutra during earthworks for the Reichsautobahn, which was scientifically documented by employees of the University of Jena during a rescue excavation. The spectrum of finds dates the building to the 14th to 16th centuries.

In July 1968 Leutra was incorporated into Maua and finally in April 1994 to Jena.

politics

Local mayor is Jörg Rosenberger. In the local mayoral elections in 2009, the non-party attorney was able to prevail against five opposing candidates with 89.9% of the valid votes; in 2004 he received 67.0% of the votes. He replaced the then local mayor Benno Raddatz ( CDU ), who was last elected in 1999 with 84.7% of the valid votes.

Culture and sights

Buildings

The fortified church of St. Nikolaus was built around 1250 in the Romanesque - early Gothic style and is one of the oldest surviving churches in Thuringia. Despite several extensive renovations, especially towards the end of the 18th century, important architectural features of the original building were preserved, such as the sound arcades in the tower, a demon figure to ward off evil on the south side of the nave and the Elfpass window on the east side of the tower. This window, also known as the “Rose von Leutra”, symbolizes the eleven remaining disciples of Jesus on Easter morning and is unique in this form in the German-speaking area.

Natural monuments

The village lies next to the 118 hectare Leutratal nature reserve, which is home to a large number of native orchids. The area has been a nature reserve since 1937. Due to the nature reserve, the Nature Conservation Union (NABU) Thuringia is also based in Leutra.

Regular events

Every year a May festival takes place in the town center. The district takes its responsibility towards the nature reserve into account with the traditional orchid festival, which is followed by orchid tours by NABU.

Culinary specialties

Trout dishes in Leutra are well known beyond its borders . Thuringian specialties can also be found, such as green dumplings and Thuringian sausages .

Economy and Infrastructure

The economy based in Leutra consists mainly of tourism. This is how pensions and restaurants can be found. In addition, NABU Thuringia and a marketing agency offer jobs. Many employed residents work in Jena.

Leutra has its own volunteer fire brigade with 30 members, 12 of whom are active. It was founded in 1860, when a field barn served as a fire station , today a prefabricated garage in the same place. The fire brigade's equipment is limited to a portable pump trailer ( built in 1964) and a hose trolley (built in 1911), tractors from individual fire department members serve as traction means. In 2014, the construction of a new fire station with a garage and assembly room as well as an office for the mayor began. The building was inaugurated on June 5, 2015.

The connection to the public transport is given by a bus stop in the town center (Leutra Wendeschleife) and one outside the town (Leutra Untermühle). The stops are served every hour by the dial-a-ride bus on line 18 and several regional bus routes.
