landscape
The area belonging to Cospeda lies partly on the heights of the Ilm-Saale-Platte, which are characterized by arable land, meadows and orchards. In the southwest lie the steep slopes and side valleys of the wooded Mühltal . The village is located within the "Middle Saale Valley" nature reserve and borders the Windknollen nature reserve in the east .
From a climatic point of view, Cospeda lies in a hilltop position that is exposed to the wind, so that cold air areas can arise on the open plateau, which flow into the side valleys of the Mühltal.
history
middle Ages
Cospeda was first mentioned in a document in 1259. The place name goes back to the old Slavic "gospoda", which means hostel. At first the village was the seat of the noble von Cossibode family (also Kossbode or Kossweda ) and was sold to the Cistercian convent in Jena in 1359. Among other things, the Lords of Heldrungen had larger estates in Cospeda, so that many donations can be found to the Michaeliskloster Jena . After its dissolution in 1525, the place belonged to the Jena office.
Modern times
The battle of Jena took place near Cospeda . On October 14, 1806, Cospeda served as a parade ground for the Lannes corps and parts of the Augereau corps. From here the French marshals began their attacks on the area of the nearby Dornberg , on Vierzehnheiligen and Isserstedt.
In 1956 the memorial was inaugurated in Cospeda in 1806. The exhibition presents an important piece of German and European history to the visitor.
The so-called Napoleon Stone is located near Cospeda. This small monument was erected in 1992 by the municipal administration of Cospeda and two non-profit associations and replaces a memorial stone that was lost in the 19th century. The distances to important Napoleonic battles such as Austerlitz and Borodino and to his last place of exile, St. Helena, are engraved on the current stone. On another side you can see the letter N and a crown (both designed in gold). Engraved on another page is an excerpt from a text by Golo Mann : “In Germany, people feasted on greater hatred and greater admiration for Napoleon for a good century.” The preceding (not engraved) sentence in the text reads “The French were the emperor in the end as the vanquished - a glorious, but dismissed pest. "
Between Cospeda and Lützeroda, the partial battle on Dornberg has already been re-enacted several times (the last times in 2006 on the 200th anniversary of the battle and in 2011). It was attended by amateur actors from several countries, and gunpowder was fired from rifles and cannons.
The historic center is located on the north-western or southern edge of the settlement.
The expressionist artist Emil Nolde painted several pictures and drawings in Cospeda at the beginning of the 20th century. In his biography he writes: "In Cospeda in the> Green Tree to the Nightingale <I found a place to live and work" and "In the evenings I sat as models, not knowing it, the farmers and truck drivers". Among other things, he created his oil painting “House in the Snow in Cospeda”, the watercolor “Sun over slush” and the pen drawing “Farmers at the table” in Cospeda in 1908 .
Cospeda later took on the municipalities of Lützeroda and Closewitz, which were independent until January 31, 1974, until all three places were incorporated into Jena on July 1, 1994.
Since 1993 there has been a partnership between Cospeda and Plomeur , a municipality in Brittany .

Culture and sights
church
The Protestant parish church is a single-nave church building with a choir closure, the construction of which began in the 12th century. The choir rectangle and its groin vault and the triumphal arch between the choir and nave are remnants of a Romanesque predecessor that was integrated into the new building from 1699. The low tower above the choir, which was probably higher and was later demolished, also dates from this period. Inside there are galleries and a pulpit from 1688. There is also a bell from the mid-15th century. Since 2017, it has been supplemented by a second bell, which was made by the Bachert company (Karlsruhe) in front of the Luther Church in Apolda for the Thuringian Day.
Museum 1806
Due to the historical events in 1806, a memorial was set up in Cospeda. In addition to historical exhibits on the battle and the war between Prussia and France, historical maps and images as well as reports from contemporary witnesses are shown. The exhibition provides information about the prehistory, causes, course and effects of the battle near Jena and Auerstedt as well as the war burden of the people affected, about the everyday life of the soldiers and the function and effect of the weapons of this historical period.
