Joachim Lehmann (born November 27, 1935 in Dresden , † July 28, 2000 in Jena ) was a German Evangelical Lutheran pastor , painter , graphic artist and poet .

Professional and artistic career

Lehmann was first influenced - both professionally and artistically - by people in his family environment. His maternal grandfather was the painter Carl Harstall , his father was the former missionary and later theology professor Arno Lehmann . When he was appointed to the Martin Luther University , the family moved to Halle in 1950 . Here Joachim passed his Abitur and studied Protestant theology . At the same time he took painting lessons from Professor Erwin Hahs . He went to Otto Fischer-Lamberg to draw . He also practiced life drawing with Werner Rataiczyk and Albert Ebert .

In 1960 he passed his first state examination in theology . After his marriage the following year, he took up his first and only pastoral position in Cospeda near Jena, where he worked until the end of his life. In 1964, he put his dissertation on the subject of religion and Expressionism , represented on the artistic community bridge before and became a doctor of theology doctorate . By dealing with this topic he made contact with Erich Heckel and Karl Schmidt-Rottluff , whom he visited several times in Berlin and with whom he exchanged pictures. He became known as a painter and graphic artist at home and abroad. In 1965 he won first prize in a Bible illustrator competition. Some of his pictures with biblical-Christian references found their way into catechetical books of the GDR .

Mural Last Supper in the Evangelical Community Center Thomas Müntzer von Kapellendorf, created in 1970, removed after 1990

For his neighboring pastor in Kapellendorf , he carried out a commissioned work in the local Evangelical Community Center: he designed the wall of the community hall with a picture of the Lord's Supper . This mural was later whitewashed.

In 1972 he played a leading role in founding a Thuringian “magazine for church art”, in which art objects that are temporarily or permanently no longer used for sacred purposes are stored. As custodian , he and his wife, who was an art historian , looked after the holdings of this magazine. In 1985 he was appointed head of the art service of the Thuringian Church.
