Life

After studying at the seminary of the Evangelical Lutheran Mission in Leipzig , Lehmann worked in southern India from 1926 to 1934. In 1947 he received his doctorate with a thesis on the sivaitic piety of the Tamul literature of edification at the University of Leipzig . From 1950 until his retirement in 1966 he taught as a professor for religious studies and missiology at the theological faculty of the University of Halle , in addition to which he also represented the subjects of South Indian history and dravidology . During his time in Halle, because of his Lutheran confession, he adhered to the old Lutheran congregation there and not to the uniate regional church.

In 1966 he was awarded an honorary doctorate by the Concordia Seminary of the Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod in St. Louis .

Lehmann is the father of the journalist Johannes Lehmann and the evangelist Theo Lehmann . He died in 1984. His grave is in the Laurentius cemetery in Halle (Saale).

Lehmann was mainly concerned with studies on the religiosity of Hinduism and translations from Tamil ; in addition, he dealt with the history of the evangelical mission in India.
