Theodor "Theo" Lehmann (born May 29, 1934 in Dresden ) is a German Evangelical Lutheran pastor , youth evangelist and author.

Life

Lehmann was born in Dresden in 1934 as the third child of the India missionary and later mission and religious scholar Arno Lehmann . He studied theology in Leipzig, where he was particularly impressed by Ernst Sommerlath . In addition, he was influenced by the writings of Werner Elert , Hermann Sasse and especially Helmut Thielicke became his great role model. He received his PhD on the subject of gospel and Negro spirituals to the doctor of theology . From 1964 to 1976 he was pastor in Karl-Marx-Stadt . From 1976 until his retirement in 1998 he was a regional evangelist of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Saxony .

His followers appreciate his clear proclamation, which is seasoned with a lot of humor . Due to his stance critical of the state, which became clear again and again in his sermons, he was treated for decades as a hostile-negative person in the OV "Spider" by the Ministry for State Security of the GDR . For this purpose, among other things, unofficial employees (IM) were smuggled into the closest circle of employees and confidants. In addition, targeted slander and smear campaigns within and outside the regional churches were carried out against him by the secret service, as documented by action plans.

He is also known through numerous songs and books. He wrote works on the history and theology of the "Negro Spirituals" and the life of the gospel singer Mahalia Jackson .

Lehmann, who began to be interested in “black” music at an early age, published Blues & Trouble , the first book about the blues in the GDR , in 1966 in the Berlin Henschel publishing house . In the mid-1980s Lehmann wrote some texts for record covers for the Amiga series Blues Collection . During his time as a pastor in Karl-Marx-Stadt , he held youth services dealing with the blues. These special services were comparable to the blues masses in East Berlin .

Lehmann seeks intensive cooperation with other churches and free churches as part of his missionary service . The evangelical-free church pastor , evangelist and songwriter Jörg Swoboda is one of his close collaborators . He carries out many of his evangelistic activities with him. Another frequent companion is the songwriter Wolfgang Tost .

In 2004 he oriented believing Christians to what he believed to be an imminent new martyrdom : “We should use the breathing space to prepare for times when being a Christian is no longer cool but dangerous. What we need are Bible- proof and, if necessary, fireproof Christians who are capable of concentration camps. ”In 2012, Lehmann signed a declaration by church members that“ practiced homosexuality is incompatible with the Holy Scriptures ”.

Even in old age he is still politically active, speaking on current issues and attending Pegida demonstrations .
