Lichtenhain is a district of Jena in Thuringia with 1087 inhabitants (June 30, 2014) on an area of 2.12 km².
geography
Lichtenhain is located in a small western side valley of the Saale , about two kilometers southwest of the city center. In the east it borders directly on the Jena-Süd district , while the terrain rises steeply on the other sides to the shell limestone formation of the Ilm-Saale-Platte . To the south lies the Lichtenhainer Höhe (321 meters), behind it the districts of Ammerbach and Winzerla . The town center itself extends along Mühlenstraße above the Carl-Zeiss-Promenade and Lützowstraße at a height of about 200 meters.
About 20% of the residents are foreigners, mostly students of the Friedrich Schiller University Jena , who are accommodated in the dormitories on Herrenberg above Lichtenhain.
history
Lichtenhain was first mentioned in a document in 1196 or 1223. These mentions are related to the local noble family von Lichtenhain , who relocated their ancestral seat to Schöngleina in 1501 . Lichtenhain later belonged to the Duchy of Saxony-Meiningen as an exclave , while Jena and the surrounding area were part of the Grand Duchy of Saxony-Weimar-Eisenach . In the duchy it belonged to the district of Saalfeld until it moved from Sachsen-Meiningen to Sachsen-Weimar-Eisenach in 1913 (in exchange for some areas near Kranichfeld ) and was incorporated into the city of Jena. In the first half of the 20th century, large Carl Zeiss factories were built in the area between the Westbahnhof and Lichtenhain along the Carl Zeiss Promenade. In the 19th century the village was still rural and known for its beer. In addition, Meyers Konversations-Lexikon in 1908 designated it as one of the main places of entertainment for Jena students. For example, it was a beer duchy and thus the venue for a carnival-style student drinking game.
Culture and sights
The most important architectural monument in Lichtenhain is the Protestant parish church of St. Nikolaus. The fortified church was built at the beginning of the 15th century with the inclusion of a Romanesque previous building. A cycle of mural paintings on the outside wall of the church with originally 118 biblical scenes from around 1420 is important. The Lichtenhainer beer was created in the village .
