history

Naming

The name Burgau can be traced back to the founding of a castle (today Burgau castle ruins ) in the middle of the Saale floodplain and near today's Jena district by the Lords of Lobdeburg around 1140, which came into Wettin possession at the beginning of the 14th century .

Adrian Beier ( Geographus Jenensis… 1665, 275) says: “From Burgau Castle. This castle / which is spelled differently Beregowe / Bergowe / Bergow / Burgau is located on a hill in the village of Burgau / on the Triesnitz brook / and on the Saalstrom / .... “Another interpretation can be found in the derivation of the Slavic word berka / perka ( fish ), which is said to be evidenced by the abundance of fish in the Saale at that time. In addition, the coat of arms of the Lobdeburg-Burgundian line includes the symbol of a fish.

First mention

In 1216 a Hermann von Bergau is mentioned. The place was first mentioned as Burgowe on October 31, 1257 by the Hartmann and Otto von Bergowe brothers as part of the award of a vineyard under the Lobdeburg to the Oberweimar nunnery . The oldest tradition from court owners comes from the period 1421–1425. During the Saxon Civil War , the castle was besieged, captured and demolished by Duke Wilhelm in 1447. The castle was rebuilt, but after the death of the last descendant of the Burgau family in 1468 it fell to Elector Ernst of Saxony . His sons Friedrich the Wise and Johann the Steadfast sold the castle again in 1510.

Modern times

At the end of January 1637, the Swedes had invaded Jena and already had the city under their control when pursuing imperial troops were sighted. The Swedes felt compelled to flee to the east bank of the Saale and to destroy all bridges in the vicinity of Jena in order to thwart the advance of the enemy. In 1755 the castle was completely demolished.

Up until the end of the 19th century, Burgau's working life was dominated by agriculture. Around 1836 there were 42 houses with 214 inhabitants in the village. The hallway maintained together with Winzerla often led to disputes between the two villages.
