Burgau castle ruins

The castle ruin Burgau is a defunct Niederungsburg in Jena in the Burgau district in Thuringia .

location

Burgau is located northwest of Lobeda and the Lobdeburg in the Saale floodplain on a rocky terrace that slopes steeply to the south. The old Saale bridge Jena-Burgau shows the importance of Burgau as a crossing point.

history

A Burgau castle was mentioned in 1305 as a Wettin seat . It was in the 12./13. Century was founded by the Lobdeburgers . From around 1480 Burgau was the seat of the Wettin dual office of Jena-Burgau . Remnants of the fortification have been preserved in a section-like ditch that closes the small mountain spur to the west and continues on a small north slope to the east. In 2007, parts of a bridge ramp and a building were found on the unbuilt area of the former castle. In 1451 the facility was destroyed in the Saxon Civil War and only rebuilt to a lesser extent. In 1753 the castle was torn down to its foundation walls because it was in disrepair. The structural remains were secured.

Binderburg

From 1906 to 1910, Professor Adolph Binder built today's "Binderburg" on the site of the old castle. After he and his family had fled to West Germany in 1949, the castle was rented out by the state housing management and during this time it increasingly fell into disrepair. After the fall of the Wall , the Binder family got the building back and sold it in 2003 to the Jena physicist Michael Willsch. He then began with an extensive renovation, which was mostly done in-house. Since then the castle has been partially used for events.
