Life

Ferdinand Wachter was born on his father's manor . His sister Amalia Wilhelmine Wachter (1790–1826) was married to the pastor Christian Ludwig Brehm , who later became the father of Alfred Brehm .

In 1807 he came to the cathedral school in Naumburg and began studying law at the University of Jena in 1816 , but after a short time he changed the subject and studied history and German . In 1819 he obtained his Dr. phil. and completed his habilitation in 1820 through a Latin treatise on the significance of the Siegfried saga as a private lecturer. He held lectures on Old High German literature and the Old Norse sagas of gods and heroes ; he was only promoted to associate professor in 1834 at the request of Heinrich Karl Eichstädt .

In 1854 he asked for his release so that he could manage his estate near Plauen himself. After giving up this after a few years, he bought a house in Lobeda and devoted himself to his literary work.

Robbery

On the night of July 19 to 20, 1861, Ferdinand Wachter fell victim to a robbery at the Burgau Bridge between Burgau and Lobeda. The perpetrator killed him, took the house key and tried unsuccessfully to break into the money boxes. The perpetrator was Rodeck, a nineteen-year-old journeyman carpenter from Lobeda, who had only been released from prison six months earlier. The execution of the murderer took place on January 6, 1862 in Weimar.

Writing

From 1827 to 1830 he was the forum for criticism in the field of history and its auxiliary sciences and published there, for example, the rhyming translation of the Helgi songs .

His most important works were writings on Thuringian history in the Middle Ages and the translation of Snorre Sturluson Heimskringla (Weltkreis). In addition, there was his work for the General Encyclopedia of Sciences and Arts by Johann Samuelansch and Johann Gottfried Gruber , for the Universal Lexicon of the Present and Past by Heinrich August Pierer , the Neue Nekrolog der Deutschen and the Allgemeine Literatur-Zeitung . In the years from 1820 to 1824 he also tried his hand as a poet and playwright.
