Life

Jonathan Karl Zenker was initially tutored by his father. From 1813 he attended a grammar school in Weimar and later began to study theology in Jena in 1818 . The urge for scientific training predominated, however, and from that time he devoted himself only to natural science.

In 1823 he went to Dresden to mentor a son from Hamburg and studied medicine at the Medical and Surgical Academy. He returned to Jena and obtained his medical doctorate with his dissertation Batrachomyologia and then qualified as a private lecturer in natural history.

In 1828 he was appointed associate professor in the philosophy faculty, and in 1836 he was appointed court counselor and full professor in the medical faculty.
