Helmut Patzer

Helmut Patzer (born  May 30, 1919 in Jena ; †  November 24, 2009 in Erfurt ) was a German pediatrician . From 1957 to 1959 he was a professor at the University of Jena and then until 1984 at the Medical Academy in Erfurt , where he served as director of the children's clinic and from 1970 to 1973 as rector of the university.

Helmut Patzer was born in 1919 in the Lichtenhain district of Jena and studied medicine at the university there from 1939 to 1944 , interrupting his military service , from which he also received his doctorate in 1944 . From 1945 he worked at the medical clinic in Jena and from 1948 at the children's clinic at the university. In 1952 he obtained his habilitation , a year later, after the death of Jussuf Ibrahim , he became the acting director of the Jena children's clinic. In 1957, he was appointed professor of paediatrics at the University of Jena. Two years later, Patzer was appointed to the Medical Academy Erfurt (MAE), where he headed the children's clinic until his retirement in 1984, the further development of which he was responsible for in the first years after his appointment. From 1960 to 1964 he was Vice Rector for Student Affairs at the MAE and from 1970 to 1972 as Rector of the University.

The main focus of Helmut Patzer’s medical work was neuropediatrics as well as aspects of pedagogy , psychology and psychiatry in childhood. He dealt with neuromotor and psychosocial development as well as the support of disabled children. From 1976 he was a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina . In addition, he was made a full member in 1990 and an honorary member in 2001 by the Academy of Non-profit Sciences in Erfurt . He also received the title of senior medical officer .

Helmut Patzer directed the Collegium Musicum of the Medical Academy in Erfurt. From 1960 he was violist of the Orchestra of German Pediatricians , which was founded in the same year, but in which he was no longer active from 1961 due to the division of Germany with a travel ban to West Germany . Only after his retirement in 1984 and the political change in the GDR did he return to the orchestra until 2008.

From 1958 Patzer was married to a pediatrician and father of a son and a daughter. In November 2009 he died in Erfurt after a serious illness.
