The Leutratal and Cospoth is a nature reserve (NSG) in the independent city of Jena and in the Saale-Holzland district in Thuringia . The NSG, located south of the core city of Jena, has an area of 582.9 ha . The valley of the Leutra and the area around the 397 meter high Cospoth are parts of the nature reserve.
location
The nature reserve lies in the area of the Ilm-Saale- and Ohrdrufer Platte and lies between the Jena districts of Ammerbach , Göschwitz , Leutra and Winzerla and the towns of Nennsdorf , Oßmaritz and Schorba, which are part of the Bucha municipality .
Federal motorway 4 , built in the 1930s, ran through the area of the nature reserve . The line was closed in November 2014 in favor of a new 11.8 kilometer line between the Jena-Göschwitz and Magdala junctions . In addition to adapting to the current traffic volume by expanding it to six lanes, the aim of re-routing was also to remove the motorway from the nature reserve. For this purpose, traffic is directed through the newly built Jagdberg tunnel below the nature reserve.
Immediately after the completion of the new route, the dismantling work on the former route through the Leutratal began. The ceiling was removed by 2016 . In the same year, renaturation began on the remaining route consisting of rubble, river pebbles and remains of concrete. The pioneer plants included sweet grasses , foxtail plants and camomiles . The source of the Leutra was exposed again in the course of the motorway dismantling.
History and Conservation
A 141.5 hectare area of today's NSG was provisionally designated as NSG "Leutratal" in 1937 and finally in 1961. As part of the major nature conservation project “Orchid Region Jena - Muschelkalkhang im Mittleren Saaletal”, a further 441.4 hectares were placed under protection in 2007 and given the current name “Leutratal und Cospoth”.
The protective purpose of the NSG is the "preservation of the large, orchid-rich dry and semi-arid grasslands and orchid-book forests as a habitat for rare plants and animals [as well as] securing an important teaching, research and excursion object".
