The Church of St. Laurentius

St. Laurentius is the Protestant church in the Maua district of the city of Jena in Thuringia .

Building

The church is located in the center of Maua next to the historic cemetery . In 1468, according to an inscription on the northern buttress, the construction of the Gothic choir began. The existing Romanesque masonry of a previous chapel or church was included. The patron saint of the church is the holy martyr Laurentius . The choir is easted and consists of a yoke with a three-sided polygonal end. It has a ribbed vault , the ribs ride on consoles that are designed as heads or carry tracery . The keystonein the vault is decorated and bears the year 1483. Light falls into the room through lancet windows . A sacrament niche with a late Gothic gable is set in the north wall of the choir . Outside, the choir is defined by buttresses and circumferential profiled, cranked plinths and eaves.

The construction, which began in the late Gothic period, was not completed until a few centuries later, when a simple nave was erected the same width as the choir, which was completed in 1819. The belfry made of iron rods on the roof of the choir comes from that time . The nave was raised to the roof truss and adjusted to the height of the choir.

The interior of the hall church is kept simple. It contains a three-sided gallery , which is two-storey on the long sides. These, like the pulpit altar , were built in the early 19th century and renovated in 1968/69.
