Gerhard Arlt

Gerhard Arlt (born March 3, 1910 in Ketten , Northern Bohemia; † March 14, 1992 in Jena ) was a German painter , graphic artist and local historian .

life and work

Arlt attended the elementary and community school in chains. Before 1925 he began his apprenticeship as a blank and lead laser. He worked in this profession until 1933. Around 1930 his first publications of local history stories appeared in the "Reichenberger Heimatzeitung" and in the "Yearbook of the German Mountain Association". He also took part in photo competitions. From 1935 to 1941 he was castellan at Grafenstein Castle . From 1941 to 1945 he served as a soldier in World War II . The family was then expelled and he came to Thuringia . From 1945 to 1992 he lived in Rothenstein .

Arlt worked as a glazier at VEB Carl Zeiss Jena for over 20 years . He took part in the company's painting and drawing circle, which at that time was headed by the painter Walter Herbert and later by the painter Kurt Hanf. About 300 drawings, watercolors, monotypes and linocuts were created. He had exhibitions at the Dornburg castles , in Jena and in Rothenstein. As a committed honorary monument conservator , he wrote articles on local history for the local press and for the monthly magazine "Kultur und Heimat". In lectures with slides, he drew attention to the beauties in nature and historically valuable buildings in villages and towns in the Saale Valley.

Honors

In 1988 Gerhard Arlt became an honorary citizen of Rothenstein . A street in this parish is named after him. In 1991 the Rothenstein home parlor was opened. This houses a permanent exhibition with works by Gerhard Arlt. After his death, exhibitions of his works took place in the "Haus auf der Mauer" in Jena, in the Jena University of Applied Sciences , the Ernst Abbe Library in Jena and in Camburg , Orlamünde , Eisenberg , Hummelshain and Stadtroda .

Memorial stone for Gerhard Arlt in Rothenstein, Oelknitz district

A memorial stone made of Jena limestone in the Oelknitz district has been a reminder of Gerhard Arlt since 2000. This was designed, manufactured and largely financed by the master stonemason Eckart Bock, a long-time supporter of the preservation of culturally valuable monuments.
