Leon Jessen (born June 11, 1986 in Brande ) is a former Danish football player . Most recently he was under contract with Esbjerg fB .

youth

Jessen began his career in the youth department of Brande IF and Ikast FS , which since the merger between Ikast and Herning Fremad to FC Midtjylland, represent its youth department.

After he had already been promoted to the Danish U-19 international as an Ikast player at youth level, he made his professional debut on May 23, 2004 in the game against Esbjerg fB , in which he scored the decisive goal for the 2-1 home win.

FC Midtjylland

As of 2005, Jessen, who was versatile on the left wing, had fought for a regular place in the professional team of Midtjylland and had become a crowd favorite due to his fighting style.

In the 2006/07 season he caused a little sensation with the team when they played for the title in the SAS league for a long time and ended up runner-up. The team, which managed almost without veterans, was certified in the run-up to the season with talent, but they had been classified more in the middle of the league. In addition to Jessen, players like Dennis Sørensen , Mikkel Thygesen , Jesper Mikkelsen , Magnus Troest and Simon Poulsen advanced from talents to top players in the league and attracted the interest of various larger clubs.

In the 2007/08 season the club then lost a large part of its top performers to clubs in stronger European leagues, which again meant that it was classified as an outsider for the title fight. Contrary to expectations, the team played again for the title and repeated the performance of the previous year with the repeated runner-up title. They had managed to integrate their own youth players, such as Simon Kjær , into the team, who were able to call up strong performances right away. Jessen, now one of the more established players in the squad, played a solid season before sustaining a serious groin injury in the twelfth game of the season and was out for over a year.

It wasn't until the spring of 2009 that he made a comeback and played the last eight games of the season. His team finished fourth in the end.

In the 2009/10 season, Jessen was completely fit again and was able to build on his strong performances from earlier days. In a newly formed defense around the veteran Martin Albrechtsen , he has since been called up almost exclusively as a left full-back.

1. FC Kaiserslautern

For the 2010/11 season , Jessen moved abroad and signed a four-year contract with the newly promoted German Bundesliga 1. FC Kaiserslautern . At the beginning of the season he made it into the starting line-up. From this he was ousted again by his competitor Alexander Bugera in the first half of the season . In the second half of the season, however, he held his regular place again, where he was used in each of the 17 games, 15 of which he played over the full 90 minutes. He was also able to book his first assists in the Bundesliga in the last two home games against St. Pauli and Werder Bremen ; In both games he managed a preliminary work.

For the first eight match days of the 2011/12 season, Jessen was in the Red Devil's starting line-up before he had to leave Bugera again. He played the next eleven games from the start, Jessen was substituted on only once for Bugera on matchday 12 in the 81st minute. In the second half of the season he came on the 20th matchday against Cologne for his first use when he came on in the 63rd minute for the injured Bugera. He played the next five games from the start and over the full length of the game. On February 18, 2012, he scored his first Bundesliga goal in a 2-1 home defeat against Borussia Mönchengladbach . The remarkable shot in the corner was nominated for goal of the month . In the rest of the season Jessen was no longer used. At the end of the 2011/12 season he was relegated to the 2nd Bundesliga with FCK .

Loan to Ingolstadt

At the end of January 2013, Jessen was awarded to league competitor FC Ingolstadt 04 until the end of the 2012/13 season . He made his first game on the 28th day of the season. He played a total of seven games for Ingolstadt in the second half of the 2012/13 season. At the end of the season, the loan was extended to 2015. At the same time, Jessen extended his contract with Kaiserslautern until 2016.

Esbjerg fB

For the 2015/16 season Jessen returned to Denmark and moved to Esbjerg fB . He signed a three-year contract. Jessen ended his active career there at the end of December 2016.

National team

During his time in the youth team of Ikast FS, he was called up to the Danish U-19 national team. From 2006 he was a member of the Danish U-21 national team before his serious injury forced him to take a break. Between 2004 and 2008 he completed a total of 15 youth international matches.

After his comeback, he made his senior national team debut on November 14, 2009 in a friendly against South Korea . Four days later he had to give preference to his greatest competitor for the position on the left in defense, Michael Lumb , in the game against the USA in Aarhus . For the international friendly match against Austria on March 3, 2010, he was again called up to the squad of the senior national team.
