Michael Lumb (born January 9, 1988 in Aarhus ) is a Danish football player . In 2008 he was voted Denmark's best youth player.

Birth and childhood

Michael Lumb was born in Aarhus in 1988 to an English father and a Danish mother . He also grew up in Aarhus.

Club career

Lumb began his career in the youth of the Danish multisport club Aarhus KFUM. As a ten-year-old, he moved to Aarhus GF, which is known for its football team . At AGF he became an important part of the strong '88 class of the club, which celebrated the championship title in the Danish junior league in 2005. He made his international debut in February 2004 with the Danish U-16 national team.

Aarhus GF

On March 16, 2005, at the age of 17, Lumb completed his first professional game for AGF in the 3-0 away defeat against Odense BK . In the 2005/06 season he became the first of his highly traded class to become a permanent part of the professional team. However, the season was disastrous for the club. With 12th place in the table, after 30 years of membership in the first division, they were relegated to the second division for the first time.

The descent resulted in the departure of several alleged veterans such as Thomas Lindrup , Christer George or Tobias Grahn . As a result, a team rejuvenation was expected, which appeared sensible due to the integration of the former teammates from Lumb's youth team. However, the club acted contrary to expectations and signed Olof Persson , Peter Sand , or Ole Budtz again more or less experienced players. This strategy turned out to be the right one, as AGF celebrated their immediate promotion at the end of the season as second in the table. Lumb, now established as a regular on the team's left-back, remained the only talent of his generation in the squad.

In the promotion season there was a year late, also due to the end of the career of Sand and the departure of some top performers, the long overdue team rejuvenation. During the year, a total of 6 former teammates Lumbs made their debut on the AGF professional team. Lumb himself proved to be much better than the previous season and advanced to become the league's “shooting star”. Together with Budtz, Kim Madsen and Ulrik Lindkvist , he formed AGF's back four , which became the team's showpiece. As a result, the team held the league as tenth in the table, which was largely attributed to the good defensive performance. Lumb played sometimes outstandingly and was honored at the end of the season with the choice of Danish “U-21 Player of the Year”. In addition to Martin Jørgensen , who received this trophy back in 1996, he was only the second player in the club's history to receive this award. The Danish tabloid Ekstra Bladet previously voted him “Shooting Star of the first half of the season” or “AGF Player of the Season”. He also received the “AGF Player of the Year” award from the club.

In the 2008/09 season, the team improved and had nothing to do with relegation in any phase of the season. Due to the engagements of Dan Thomassen , Benny Feilhaber and Jakob Poulsen , the team had improved in quality, which suggested an upward trend for the next season. Lumb, who again consistently performed well, was promoted to U-21 national player during the season and had already aroused the interest of various foreign clubs.

Against public expectations, the notoriously financially weak club was able to keep its “jewel” for the 2009/10 season, when they wanted to catch up with the top field of the league. However, when this did not succeed with table position 6 during the winter break, a change from Lumb became relevant again.

Zenit St. Petersburg

In January 2010, Lumb surprisingly moved to Russia to Zenit St. Petersburg for a transfer fee of around € 1.5 million . Aarhus received only a fraction of the transfer fee, as the club had sold most of the player's transfer rights to a private group of investors in order to get a higher annual budget. Lumb, who was also courted by Ajax Amsterdam and Aston Villa , justified his decision in favor of Zenit with the fact that the club around coach Luciano Spalletti could offer him the best prospects. Furthermore, his chances of being in Denmark's final squad for the 2010 World Cup would improve significantly as a player in a top European league. He was previously accused of greed for money by the Danish tabloids, as he was supposed to earn five times his previous annual salary in Russia. Only the transfer of Lumb made it possible for the "living club legend" Martin Jørgensen to return to Aarhus, which meant that fan criticism regarding the departure of their defensive talent was limited.

Feyenoord

In St. Petersburg, however, he could not prevail, which also cost his participation in the 2010 World Cup. In summer 2010 he was awarded to the Dutch first division club Feyenoord . Even there he could not fight for a regular place and only came to two short assignments.

Aalborg BK

After only six months the Feyenoord chapter was over, and Zenit lent Lumb back to his Danish homeland, where he played for Aalborg BK for six months . In Aalborg Lumb fought for a regular place and played 14 games. Nevertheless, Lumb returned to Zenit St. Petersburg in the summer.

Sc freiburg

In the 2011/12 winter break, St. Petersburg awarded Lumb to the German Bundesliga club SC Freiburg until the end of the season . He made his debut for the Breisgauer on January 21, 2012, when he was in the starting eleven in a 1-0 win against FC Augsburg on matchday 18 ; Right on his debut, he gave the template for Matthias Ginter's winning goal in the 88th minute . Overall, Lumb was used for Freiburg only five times in the 2011/12 season. From June 2012 Lumb went back to Petersburg.

VfL Bochum

After his contract in St. Petersburg had expired on December 31, 2012, Lumb moved back to Germany in January 2013, where he signed a contract with second division VfL Bochum until the end of the 2012/13 season.

FC Vestsjælland

For the 2013/14 season Lumb moved to his home country for FC Vestsjælland .

National team

Lumb was used from the U-16 national team in all youth selections in his country. With the Denmark U-21 he was last in the qualification for the European Championship 2009 in Sweden , which one missed as a third party . In 2010 he finished second with the U-21 selection at the Toulon tournament , but was not part of the squad at the 2011 U-21 European Championship in his own country.

On November 18, 2009, he made his debut for the Danish senior team in a 3-1 home win in the friendly against the USA in Aarhus . Lumb not only had the most ball contacts of all Danes, but also the best rate of duels. A few days earlier he was part of the squad in the friendly against South Korea on November 14, 2009, although Leon Jessen was preferred.
