Simon Busk Poulsen (born October 7, 1984 in Sønderborg ) is a former Danish football player .

From 2002 to the end of 2007 he played in his native Denmark in the Superliga for SønderjyskE Fodbold and for FC Midtjylland . From 2008 to the beginning of 2017, Poulsen was under contract abroad, although - apart from a one and a half year interlude in Italy with Sampdoria Genoa - he had only played in the Netherlands with AZ Alkmaar and PSV Eindhoven . In the Eredivisie he completed 137 missions in which he scored six goals. In addition, Simon Poulsen played 35 games for the Danish national team and took part in both the 2010 World Cup in South Africa and the 2012 European Championship in Poland and Ukraine .

Youth and first steps in professional football (until 2007)

Poulsen's father is American and his mother is Danish. He grew up in Ulkebøl . and joined SUB Sønderborg as a child. In 2002 he made his debut in the first team of IK Sønderjylland, which merged with other teams to form Sønderjysk Elitesport in early 2004 . A year later he moved from there to FC Midtjylland . In the 2005/06 season the club finished seventh in the table and in the following season FC Midtjylland was runner-up.

Championship title and European Cup appearances with AZ Alkmaar (2008 to 2012)

During the winter break of the 2007/08 season, Poulsen moved to the Netherlands for AZ Alkmaar , where he signed a contract that ran until 2012. On January 13, 2008 he made his debut for the North Holland when he came on in the 1: 6 defeat on Matchday 19 in the 74th minute for Barry Opdam . With AZ Alkmaar, Poulsen became Dutch champions in 2009 and played in the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Europa League (until 2009 UEFA Cup ).

From the Netherlands to Italy and back (2012 to 2017)

On August 25, 2012, Poulsen moved to Italy to join Serie A promoted Sampdoria Genoa . Due to injury, he could not earn a regular place and only came to seven point games.

In the new season, the 2017/18 season , Simon Poulsen played 16 games and scored his only goal of the season in the home game against AC Horsens on September 16, 2017.
