Calcutta in 1937: It is monsoon season and leprosy has a firm grip on the country. Anne-Marie Stretter, who has been married to the French ambassador to India, Stretter, for 17 years, lives in the French embassy in central Calcutta. Anne-Marie Stretter's father is French, the mother came from Venice, where Anne-Marie, who was still called Ana-Maria Guardi at the time, grew up and became an aspiring musician. With her first marriage at the age of 18, she not only gave up her name, but also gave up her musical ambitions. Her husband worked as a colonial official and went with her to Savannakhet in Laos , where Anne-Marie could hardly bear it. When Ambassador Stretter was inspecting the posts in the Mekong, he immediately unhooked Anne-Marie's husband. The second marriage followed and 17 years in various capitals of Asia until the couple came to Calcutta.

Anne-Marie Stretter has since started a relationship with the entrepreneur Michael Richardson; the ambassador doesn't mind if she takes the men she wants. Life is characterized by monotony and boredom and the monsoon makes any distraction outside impossible, but the oppressive, humid heat is also hard to bear inside buildings. Anne-Marie Stretter and her husband give a reception at the embassy, to which, in addition to the Austrian ambassador, who has only been in the country for a month, the Vice-Consul of Lahore also appears. He has been transferred to Calcutta as a punishment after he shot and killed lepers in Lahore and also shot himself. It is said that he has never had a wife; but now he is following Anne-Marie Stretter, with whom he has fallen in love. At the reception he succeeds in dancing with her. Like other guests, he would like to be invited to stay the night, but Anne-Marie Stretter declines. He announces a formative departure, finally screams that he loves her and wants to stay, and is thrown out of the house. The next day, Anne-Marie Stretter, Michael Richardson, the Austrian ambassador, Georges Crawn, a good friend of Anne Marie Stretter, and a young guest from the embassy travel to the Delta Islands, where the ambassador's villa is located. The Vice-Consul comes along separately and also follows the group to the “Prince of Wales” hotel, where they eat. Tired of idleness, Anne-Marie Stretter and Michael Richardson had already tried to commit suicide together in the past. Since then they have made a pact that no partner will be prevented from suicide by the other. The group leaves Anne-Marie Stretter alone in the evening. She spends the night on a bench in the park, in the morning you can find her evening coat on the beach.

It is reported that the Vice-Consul submitted his resignation shortly afterwards. Michael Richardson returned to England after the death of his wife, where he also died.
