Ahazites

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ahazites (or Antiochians) were called in the 17th century the followers of Thomas Hobbes ' teaching that the church should be completely subordinate to secular power and that the sovereign or other authorities should be granted unlimited power over church matters ( jus territoriale circa sacra ).

The doctrine is named after the biblical kings Ahaz and Antiochus , who had subordinated the religion in an extreme way to the secular authorities. Hobbes took this view in his work De cive (1642), which is why he and his followers were also called Ahazites.
