action
In Megève, France, the red-haired girl Nicole is killed during a winter stay. Four years later, little Roberta Serpieri visits her father Franco Serpieri, a well-known sculptor, in Venice. However, shortly after arrival she disappears without a trace and is found dead a little later. Her trusting father Franco begins to investigate on his own because he does not trust the seedy Inspector De Donato. Roberta's mother, Elizabeth Serpieri, has also come from Amsterdam and is looking for the murderer. The striking analogies of the murders lead them to different people whom they know only briefly and are now suspect: the merchant Serafian, a friend, Ginevra Storelli and her lover Filippo Venier; a paralyzed godchild of Serafian and a lawyer, Bonaiuto. Nothing seems to happen; the parents themselves are in mortal danger. In the end, Franco discovers that Father James, Serafian's brother, committed the murders as he is plagued by memories of his mother, a red-haired prostitute.

criticism
The "mixture of thriller and horror film" was highly regarded in Germany: "" The Child "captivates from the first minute with its dreamy images of the morbid lagoon city and its hypnotic music. And the gondolas are in mourning, ”write the filmtipps.at . The film critic Christian Keßler praised the film as a “great thriller” and concluded: “With a virtuoso but not too intrusive use of the tried and tested tension-increasing means (e.g. subjective camera positions), Aldo Lado does it in what is probably his best film exemplary way of enhancing a good script with real style (...) ”. The Italian Segnalazioni Cinematografiche were less enthusiastic. They saw “meager technical skills in the service of a confused and artificial film” and also criticized the alternation of sadistic and erotic scenes. In La Stampa , S.Reggiani, on the other hand, praised the idea of relocating the scene to the lagoon city and noticed successful suggestive effects.
