The student (original title: L'Étudiante ) is a French love story from 1988. After La Boum - The Fete and La Boum 2 - The Fete continues, it is the third collaboration between director Claude Pinoteau and leading actress Sophie Marceau . Because it follows a similar pattern, it is also commonly known as La Boum 3 .

action

During a ski trip, the musician Edouard meets the beautiful teacher candidate Valentine. Edouard is visibly taken with Valentine. Without further ado, he makes an appointment with her for a rendezvous that ends in a night of love. The next day Edouard goes on a tour of France with his band and Valentine moves into a shared apartment whose address Edouard does not know. Despite these difficulties, there is a reunion in which both ultimately admit their mutual love.

A passionate love affair develops between Valentine and Edouard. Whenever Edouard can free himself between the live gig and the studio recording, he meets with Valentine, who in turn, waiting for Edouard's calls, watches through the nights or takes the train from Paris to Dijon to see Edouard. The romance is soon clouded by jealousy, egoism, a lack of understanding of the needs of the other and finally infidelity: Edouard cheats with Patricia, a member of his band. But regardless of this failure, the relationship is on the brink. The very different living conditions of the two of them - Valentine is taking her second state examination while Edouard is working on the composition of a film music theme - make it increasingly difficult to have them together.

In the evening, as Valentine celebrates passing her written exam, the two fight violently. Nevertheless: When Edouard offers Valentine that she can live with him, she is very happy and gratefully accepts. But when she finds out about Edouard's infidelity - Edouard had accidentally recorded a conversation with his band mate on the answering machine , in which he reported on his night with Patricia as well as questioning his relationship with Valentine - Valentine Edouard makes a scene in front of an assembled audience. Edouard also learns that the order to compose a film music has already been awarded to someone else.

On the day Valentine has to take the oral exam, Edouard gains access to the examination rooms of the university in order to clean the table with Valentine and to express his love for her. It's the wrong moment for Valentine because she is being called for an exam. Appropriately, her exam topic deals with love and the comedy. Her extravagant lecture, in which she includes her private experiences, is at the same time a kind of conclusion of the film: Nobody can ask another to be loved by him as he expects, because that would be the height of egoism. In a final scene, Valentine and Edouard fall into each other's arms.

criticism

“Dramaturgically weak, wooden love comedy with stereotypical characters, which only gains a little more depth in the description of human relationships towards the end; drowned out by a loud sound sauce, the film impresses at best with the fresh play of the young leading actress. "
