action

During a conversation, Max Baumstein, the respected president of a human rights organization , shoots the Ambassador of Paraguay to France, Federico Lego. This is how the public and only now his wife Lina learn of Baumstein's ordeal under the Nazi dictatorship. In flashbacks you can see how Max suffered a lifelong handicap as a result of brutal abuse by the SA . The Viennese couple took him in and looked after him. Ultimately, Max emigrates to Paris with Elsa Wiener, who is very similar to his future wife Lina. Michel Wiener remains in the German Reich to sell his publishing house. However, he is arrested and sentenced to five years in a concentration camp. Elsa Wiener is currently working as a singer and animator in a Parisian cabaret . Through her personal commitment, she can ultimately obtain her husband's release. However, shortly after his arrival in Paris, he and she were shot dead by an embassy employee of the German Reich, who later became Paraguay's ambassador.

Reviews

“As a big flashback, narrated melodramatic love film with political references, which seems badly constructed and uses the evoked Nazi era rather as a nostalgic backdrop. Outstanding is the acting performance of Romy Schneider in her last role. "

“'The Walker from Sans-Souci' is the last document of the much-cited 'broken heart' that many fans believe Schneider died of shortly after the premiere. Above all, the film is a document of their uniqueness as an actor. [...] She was one of the great artists among the actresses, that alone makes 'The Walker of Sans-Souci' a work of art. "

Others

  • The title of the film and the literary source (literal translation of the title: The passer-by from [Café] Sans-Souci ) refer to a Parisian café called Sans-Souci .
  • The Stroller from Sans-Souci is the last film with Romy Schneider . It bears the dedication To David and his father in the opening credits . This refers to Romy Schneider's son David, who had a fatal accident in 1981, and his father, Romy Schneider's divorced husband Harry Meyen , who took his own life in Hamburg in 1979.
  • Actually, Romy Schneider should have stood in front of the camera in this film with her son David, who had just passed away. During the filming, the scenes that she then played with another boy in the role of little Max became a great burden.
  • Wendelin Werner , who took over the role of young Max Baumstein because of David's death, became an internationally respected mathematician , especially in the field of probability theory . He received several awards including the Fields Medal in 2006.
  • As a result of her sudden death, Romy Schneider was no longer able to synchronize herself in this last film . This was done by Eva Manhardt, who had already dubbed Romy Schneider in The Old Rifle .
  • The Chanson d'exil , a well-known melody from this film, can be heard in various formations: violin accompanied by a string ensemble , Roma ensemble and at the end of the film as a song. The lyrics are by Jacques Kirsner and Micheline Gautron, wife of the film composer Georges Delerue, and are sung by the French chansonni ère Talila.

Trivia
