The money of others (original title: L'Argent des autres ) is a French film drama with Jean-Louis Trintignant and Catherine Deneuve from 1978. A novel by Nancy Markham served as a literary model .
action
Henri Rainier has been employed as an authorized signatory at a renowned Parisian bank for 15 years . Believing that his superiors would agree, he grants a large loan to a client named Claude Chevalier d'Aven. However, this turns out to be a fraud, through whose risky investment funds numerous small investors lose their savings. When the financial scandal threatens to irreparably damage the bank's reputation, the bank managers and especially the bank director Miremont try to evade responsibility by blaming Henri alone. After all, it is Henri’s friend and superior, Vincent, who advises Miremont to dismiss Henri without notice.
Henri initially does not tell his wife Cécile and their daughters that he was released. When they go away without him, he burns his old business cards and tries to find a new job. During an interview, he initially sits alone in a white room. He is questioned over an intercom by a woman in an adjoining room, which is only separated by a one-sided transparent mirror. Then he should recommend himself to his potential new employers face to face. However, they cannot be convinced that it was not he, but bank director Miremont himself who caused the bankruptcy of his bank into millions. After all, Henri had only looked after Chevalier d'Aven personally, for example accompanied him on a flight, but not supervised his business transactions.
Henri's wife Cécile, who found out about his dismissal on her return, and the unionist Arlette advised him to sue the bank. But for that he needs evidence. With the help of Cécile, Henri's research comes across other opaque and questionable transactions by the bank. In search of a document that clearly exonerates him, he locks himself in the bank's archives. Miremont rings the doorbell and knocks on the door of the archive - threatening to alert the police. After a phone call from the archivist, Henri found the necessary paper. After tucking more explosive papers into his pants, he leaves the bank - without being stopped by Miremont - where Cécile is already waiting for him in the car.
A year later the case will be tried in court. Although Henri was ultimately unsuccessful in his fight for his good reputation, he has matured as a person and he feels more independent than ever. He also has the prospect of a new job - this time in the wine business - mediated by his friend Vincent, of all people, who was not innocent of the plot against him. The last scene shows Henri as the moderator at a fictitious wine tasting.
