Juliet Berto (* 16th January 1947 as Juliet Bertoliatti in Grenoble ; † 10. January 1990 in Paris ) was a French actress , film director and screenwriter .

Life

Berto had his first theater appearances in the mid-1960s. She came to film through an acquaintance with the director Jean-Luc Godard and soon became one of the most famous actresses in French art cinema, largely through her involvement in Godard's late sixties films Two or Three Things I Know About Her , The Chinese Woman , Weekend and The Joyful Science . With her impartiality and ability to improvise, she embodied the lifestyle of the 1968 generation and brought this to life in Jacques Rivette's 1970s productions Out 1 , Céline and Julie drive boat andImmortal duel, but also expressed in Alain Tanner's The Return from Africa and The Middle of the World .

In 1981 she made her debut as a co-director (with Jean-Henri Roger ) on the film Snow (Neige), which addressed the everyday life of drug addicts at Pigalle and thus caused a stir. The film received a César nomination for best first work . In this film, Berto played a bartender who controls the events in the background. With Cap Canaille and Havre she directed other crime films in the harbor environment.

In 1987 Juliet Berto was a member of the jury at the Berlinale . Shortly before her 43rd birthday, she succumbed to cancer.
