Van Doude (born May 28, 1926 as Doude van Herwijnen in Haarlem , Netherlands , † August 18, 2018 in France ) was a Dutch actor .

life and career

Van Doude came to Paris after the end of World War II, where he took acting lessons with Louis Jouvet . From the end of the 1940s he was active in numerous Parisian theater productions, where he primarily earned a reputation as a good comedian. He made his film debut in 1949 with a small role as a client in Mission à Tanger at the side of Raymond Rouleau .

He mainly worked as an actor in France, but also took on some film roles in the Netherlands and in Germany in the 1958 film Der eiserne Gustav . Doude has also appeared in several American films, including the hapless admirer of Audrey Hepburn in Billy Wilder's romantic comedy Ariane - Love in the Afternoon (1957). In the 1960s, Doude played supporting roles in a number of Nouvelle Vague classics , including as a journalist friend with Jean Seberg in Jean-Luc Godard's Out of Breath (1960) as well as in Alain Resnais ' I love you, I love you (1968) and in François Truffauts The Bride Wore Black (1968). He had one of his few leading roles in 1962 in Under the Sign of the Lion , directed by Éric Rohmer . He also starred in works by directors such as Roger Vadim , Yves Boisset , Claude Sautet , Costa-Gavras , Terence Young , Fred Zinnemann , Jules Dassin and Sydney Pollack .

From the 1970s onwards, Doude's film roles became noticeably smaller; he had his last appearance in 1992 in Ein Herz im Winter . He died in August 2018 at the age of 92, leaving behind his wife Alberte, two children and several grandchildren.
