The Men I Loved (Original Title: Je vous aime ) is a French drama directed by Claude Berri starring Catherine Deneuve , Gérard Depardieu and Jean-Louis Trintignant from 1980.
action
Alice, a 35-year-old songwriter, says goodbye to her partner Claude, who is driving away in a car with his son. As she watches the car, she reminisces:
When she arrives at home in her car for Christmas, she is greeted by her current boyfriend Julien as well as by her almost grown-up son Jérôme and her young daughter Sofia. On Christmas Eve she invited her exes Simon and Patrick to dinner together. When Simon arrives, he and Jérôme have a little snowball fight. Meanwhile, Alice is on the phone with Claude and Julien takes care of the food. Patrick finally arrives with his Asian wife and their daughter. Patrick gives Alice's daughter Sofia a warm welcome because he is her father. Then he plays Santa Claus for the children. While eating, Alice suddenly becomes thoughtful and she retires to her room. She remembers how she once met Julien. She had been on vacation in Mauritius with Patrick . The car wouldn't start during a rain shower, so Julien, the head of a travel agency, came to their aid and pushed the car. When Alice was playing blackjack in a casino , they met again. Now Alice is lying on her bed and crying. Julien finds her and tries to comfort her. She finally tells him that she wants to end the relationship. Their relationships never last very long, usually only a few months, but never longer than a few years. After all, she endured the submissive Julien for four years.
Later that evening, Patrick sits down with Alice in front of the fireplace. They met once when Patrick was playing the saxophonist in Simon's band. He later appeared on stage as a rock star. Sofia was eventually born, but the relationship ultimately fell apart when Alice met Julien. The next morning Julien has already disappeared. Jérôme finds a message from him next to Alice's bed. While Patrick and his family are having breakfast, Alice goes to see the sleeping Simon. He is a musician for whom she once wrote lyrics. Simon had often sat at the piano with Jérôme and made music. In the recording studio, he once encouraged Alice to step in front of the microphone and sing. His way of life with his love for alcohol, cigarettes and shabby bars put the relationship to the test again and again. They often got into violent arguments. Alice eventually tried to kill herself with pills and ended up in the hospital. They now get along well as friends. Before Patrick leaves with his wife and daughter, Alice cuts his hair. In the evening Alice thinks about Claude. He is a widowed bookseller who raises his son Thomas alone. They went on a skiing holiday together. The children got along well too. With Claude, Alice finally seemed ready to enter into a permanent relationship. Finally, Jérôme's father appears, who is going on vacation with his son.
Alice finally realizes that the relationship with Claude no longer satisfies her. As always, she longs for that feeling of love at the beginning of every relationship. She says goodbye to Claude and Thomas and is left alone.
background
The Men I Loved plays on three time levels and is told in flashbacks. The farewell to Claude at the beginning and at the end of the film corresponds to the present. With this work, director Claude Berri tried to get over his pain after the divorce from his wife Anne-Marie. Their son Thomas Langmann can be seen in a supporting role as Alain Souchon's son. Both Langmann and Souchon, who was previously only known as a musician, made their screen debut with the film. The shooting took place in Paris and Mauritius . The film was also shot at the same time as François Truffaut's drama The Last Metro (1980), in which Gérard Depardieu and Catherine Deneuve also played the leading roles.
On December 17, 1980, The Men I Loved premiered in France . In Germany the film was shown for the first time on German television by ARTE almost 30 years later on October 11, 2010 .
Reviews
"Top female study to think along with," said Cinema . For Prisma , the film was a "fun series of relationships between old master Claude Berri and a prominent cast".
Awards
At the 1981 César Awards , Serge Gainsbourg was nominated for the César in the category of best film music and Alain Souchon as the best supporting actor . Gainsbourg was ultimately defeated by Georges Delerue's score for François Truffaut's The Last Metro , while Souchon Jacques Dufilho had to admit defeat in The Unwanted Son .
