Route of the 2014 Dakar Rally

The 2014 Dakar Rally is the 36th edition of the Dakar Rally and the 35th that has actually been held. It took place in South America for the sixth time in a row . The rally started on January 5th, 2014 in Rosario , Argentina and ended after 13 stages in Valparaíso , Chile on January 18th . The motorcycles covered about 8,700 km during this time, while the cars covered over 9,300 km. For the first time there was also a stage destination in Bolivia . It is the 28th country that the Dakar Rally has passed through.

A total of 431 vehicles took part, including 174 motorcycles , 40 quads , 147 cars and 70 trucks .

Stages

The route split in the 7th and 8th stage. The motorcycles and quads drove to a stage destination in Bolivia for the first time, while the cars and trucks stayed in Argentina.

Stage results

1st stage

Robby Gordon , who was one of the favorites in the auto classification, was already more than two hours behind after the first stage after vapor bubbles had formed in the gasoline system.

2nd stage

The team around Ayrat Mardeev, the winners of the truck classification of the first stage, overturned on this stage. Gerard de Rooy's team then stopped to provide first aid to the victims . As a result, they lost 23 minutes, which were later credited to them by the race management. Ayrat Mardeev's team was uninjured, but had to give up the rally. Carlos Sousa and Miguel Ramalho, the winners of the first auto stage, were towed to the bivouac after a turbocharger damage, but could no longer compete for the third stage because the damage could not be repaired.

3rd stage

Last year's winner and leader of the quad classification, Marcos Patronelli, had to give up the rally after an accident. He was able to jump off in time before his quad fell down a slope and was destroyed. Likewise, last year's runner-up in the motorcycle classification Ruben Faria had to retire after an accident.

4th stage

In the quads, Ignacio Casale set the fastest time on this stage with 7:15:31. However, Sebastian Husseini, Rafał Sonik and Sergio Lafuente were given time retrospectively due to an error in the road book. Casale was therefore led to fourth place, 34:15 behind. Sam Sunderland, winner of the second stage in the motorcycle classification, suffered an engine failure on the connecting stretch and had to retire.

5th stage

For safety reasons, the fifth stage has been shortened for the motorcycles. Due to the extreme heat, the second part of the special stage had to be canceled. Thus the times of the first part counted as the end time of this stage. The Belgian motorcyclist Eric Palante had a fatal accident on this stage. He was found lifeless by rescue workers the next morning. Two Argentine journalists were also killed after crashing their car into a gorge about 100 meters deep. Two other occupants of the car survived injured.

6th stage

After an accident, the third place in the motorcycle classification, Francisco López Contardo, had to give up the rally. He was slightly injured when his motorcycle crashed into a dry river bed and was badly damaged. In the quad classification, Ignacio Casale, fourth in the stage, was subsequently declared the stage winner through a time credit.

7th stage

The day before, heavy rain had made parts of the planned route impassable for motorbikes and quads, which is why the timed route was shortened by around 100 km.

9th stage

The fourth place in the motorcycle classification, Alain Duclos, had to give up the rally after engine problems. The duo of Leeroy Poulter and Robert Howie, who started in the car classification, lost over four hours after a rollover to the leaders and seriously damaged their car.

10th stage

The fourth place in the motorcycle classification, Jeremías Israel Esquerre, suffered a broken arm after an accident and had to end the rally. Carlos Sainz and Timo Gottschalk, at this point in eighth place overall in the car classification, also retired after they crashed into a ditch at high speed on the connecting stage and rolled over several times. While Gottschalk was uninjured, Sainz was initially treated in the temporary field hospital of the bivouac. Shortly afterwards, the doctors also gave the all-clear.

11th stage

Marc Coma set the fastest time among the motorcycles with 6:36:08, but received a 15-minute time penalty after changing the engine. Sergio Lafuente, the runner-up in the quad classification, retired after an engine failure. The team leader of the X-raid Mini Team, Sven Quandt, issued a stable order before the stage . All Minis should now hold their position until the end of the rally, although Stéphane Peterhansel still had a good chance of victory with only 2:15 minutes behind Nani Roma.

12th stage

Joan Barreda Bort lost a lot of time on this stage. After a fall, his motorcycle suffered damage to the steering head , electrical system and a broken navigation device. As a result, he dropped from second to seventh overall. Despite the stable order from the previous day, Nani Roma lost the lead in the overall standings to Stéphane Peterhansel, who went 26 seconds ahead of the last stage due to a tire damage.

13th stage

In order to meet the given stable order, Stéphane Peterhansel slowed down on the last stage and waited around 30 kilometers before the finish for his teammate Nani Roma for five minutes to let him pass. In the truck classification, Andrei Karginow was able to defend his narrow lead in the overall classification by finishing seventh.

Belgian motorcyclist Eric Palante is the 63rd death in the history of the Dakar Rally. He and two Argentine journalists were killed on the fifth stage .
