situation
Motorcyclists in particular had fatal accidents among the participants in the rally; so did the winner of 2001 and 2002, Fabrizio Meoni , in 2005. Australian motorcyclist Andy Caldecott and two young spectators died at the 2006 Dakar . Therefore, the timing was suspended on the last day of the race. Due to the numerous victims among the spectators, a speed limit has been in place within the villages for several years, and drastic time penalties are imposed if it is determined to be exceeded.
The 2007 edition, which ran from Lisbon to Dakar, also resulted in two deaths. On the fourth stage, the 29-year-old South African motorcyclist Elmer Symons died after an accident. The 42-year-old French motorcyclist Éric Aubijoux died on the 14th stage . The cause of death has not been clearly established.
At the Dakar 2009 , the French amateur driver Pascal Terry died of a heart attack as a result of pulmonary edema . His motorcycle had previously run out of fuel, making it impossible to continue driving. His body was not found until four days later.
At the start of 2010 , the German driver Mirco Schultis came off the road in a curve in the first stage and caught a group of spectators. Five people were seriously injured, including a 28-year-old spectator who later died in hospital. Mirco Schultis was shocked and tried everything to help the injured. He gave up the race on the same day. The race management of the Dakar Rally claims that the accident occurred on a corner not open to spectators, but according to the Argentine media, those affected were watching the vehicles from their own property.
During the eleventh stage of the 2011 Dakar in Tinogasta, in the province of Catamarca, there was a serious accident with the rally car of the Argentine drivers Eduardo Amor and Horacio Alejandro Fenoglio. Your Toyota had an accident at around 6 a.m. local time with the pickup of a local farm worker, who was seriously injured in the collision and later died in hospital. The local is the 60th fatality in the Dakar Rally.
On the first day of the Dakar 2012 , the Argentine motorcycle racer Jorge Andrés Boero had a fatal accident.
