Andy Caldecott (born August 10, 1964 in Keith , † January 9, 2006 in Mauritania ) was an Australian enduro athlete and motorcycle dealer .

Life

Due to his success in numerous regional enduro rallies, the Austrian motorcycle manufacturer KTM and its motorsport boss, the successful ex-rally athlete Heinz Kinigadner , noticed him and supported him as a private driver. In the absence of sponsors, his dream of being able to take part in the Dakar Rally again in 2006 did not seem to come true . In 2005 he had already ended his sporting career when the opportunity arose shortly before Christmas.

He succeeded in winning two stages ( Agadir - Smara and Bamako - Kayes ) in the 2005 Dakar Rally and finishing sixth overall.

Accidental death

Andy Caldecott crashed his KTM 660 R on January 9th. At around 11:31 am on the ninth stage of the 2006 Dakar Rally, after about 250 km between Nouakchott and Kiffa, it was difficult and dead on the spot. The crew of the rescue helicopter, which is ready for such cases, could only determine that they were dead. Caldecott is the 49th fatality in the rally, which was held for the 28th time in 2006.

Until his fatal fall at the 2006 Dakar Rally, he was in tenth position and had won the third stage between Nador and Errachidia in Morocco with the best times at all checkpoints.

Andy Caldecott left behind his wife and a four year old daughter.
