The ALM SA ( studios Legueu Meaux ) is a 1954 by René Legueu with headquarters in Meaux based manufacturer of wheeled military vehicles. In civilian versions, some of the models are also available as heavy trucks and commercial vehicles . For commercial use there are also vehicles for property and personal protection as well as the use of public law units of the authorities such as the police and the fire brigade . Since the start of production, the company has already manufactured over 12,000 vehicles, which are marketed in over 50 countries. In 1964 the company moved to Saint-Nazaire .

The company began its work as a developer and manufacturer of vehicle parts, including transfer cases and front axles for high - volume trucks . The company patented many of the developments it made . At the same time, an all-terrain truck was created that was specially designed for agricultural use. However, the model did not make it onto the market and remained just a concept vehicle . The oil industry was then given preference in a further development . For example, a four- and six-wheel-drive version was developed for use in the Sahara , taking geophysical industrial values ​​into account . With a range of just over 1,000 km without refueling and its capabilities in desert terrain , the vehicle offered increased viability in the hostile region, mainly an appeal to the military to get their attention. In further versions, the vehicle was adapted to the use of military needs.

In August 1961, serial production of the model now known as ALM VCOM (Véhicule de Combat d'Outre-Mer) finally began , with the improvements to the vehicle being continued under the direction of the Foreign Legion under test missions at the so-called Mission Fennec ( Desert Fox ). These tests were carried out during various missions in Mauritania as well as during the liberation war of Chad during the civil war that followed shortly afterwards . A total of 193 units of the model were then delivered to the 13e demi-brigade de Légion étrangère in Djibouti after the end of the tests .

In order to inherit from his father Paul Legueu , the company 's founder had to move to Saint-Nazaire in 1964. In line with this unfavorable situation, he also relocated the company headquarters here and founded what is now ACMAT SA ( Ateliers de Constructions Mécaniques de l'Atlantique ) through a new foundation .

The company started again with the development of components. These were front and rear axles , gearboxes and transfer cases . The company was able to secure a further twelve patents. During 1967, the company launched its latest model, the ACMAT VLRA ( Véhicules de liaison, de reconnaissance et d'appui ). This was characterized above all by its robustness. But also the extraordinary performance of being able to transport 2.5 tons of payload, as well as a maximum range of 1,600 kilometers and a water tank with a capacity of 200 liters, made the model a success.

In 1981 Adrien Villette won the truck classification of the Paris-Dakar rally with such a vehicle (TPK 420) .

In May 2006, Renault Trucks Defense SA acquired the majority of shares in the company. ACMAT has since been a brand and subsidiary of the Volvo Group, to which the Renault Trucks brand belongs.
