Varechovce (until 1927 Slovak "Vrchovce" or "Varichovce"; Hungarian Variháza - until 1907 Varehóc , Ukrainian Варихiвцi / Warichiwzi ) is a municipality in the north- east of Slovakia with 149 inhabitants (December 31, 2019), which for Okres Stropkov , a Belongs to the Prešovský kraj district.
geography
The municipality is located in the Ondavská vrchovina mountains within the Low Beskydy Mountains on the upper reaches of the Oľka . The center of the village lies at an altitude of 318 m nm and is 19 kilometers from Stropkov .
Neighboring municipalities are Havaj in the north, Bystrá in the north-east, Repejov in the east and south, Korunková in the south-west, Soľník in the west and Veľkrop in the north-west.
history
Varechovce was first mentioned in writing in 1430 as Warihhaza and at that time it belonged to the territory of Stropkov. 14 porta were recorded in 1598 . In 1767 the village came under the ownership of the Vécsey family , who were replaced by Jekelfalussy in the 19th century . In 1828 there were 40 houses and 294 inhabitants who were employed as forest workers and in a saw. In the 19th century there was also a match factory that was destroyed in the First World War.
Until 1918, the place in Semplin County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia. After 1918 the inhabitants were mainly employed as farmers.

According to the 2011 census, 180 inhabitants lived in Varechovce, of whom 115 were Slovaks , 62 Russians and one each was Polish , Czech and Ukrainian .
142 residents supported the Greek Catholic Church, 20 residents the Roman Catholic Church, 10 residents the Orthodox Church and seven residents the Evangelical Church AB. One resident was non-denominational.

- Greek Catholic church in the historicizing baroque-classicist style, which replaced a wooden church that was burned out in 1827
