Tokajík (Hungarian Felsőtokaj - until 1907 Orosztokaj ) is a municipality in the north- east of Slovakia with 98 inhabitants (December 31, 2019), which for Okres Stropkov , a circle of kraj Prešovský belongs.

Tokajík and surrounding countryside

The municipality is located in the Ondavská vrchovina mountainous region within the Low Beskydy Mountains , in the source area of ​​some of the streams that belong to the Ondava river system . About five kilometers to the southwest is the Veľká Domaša reservoir . The center of the village is located at an altitude of 206  m nm and is 15 kilometers from Stropkov .

Neighboring municipalities are Brusnica in the north, Piskorovce in the east, Ďapalovce in the southeast, Vyšný Hrabovec in the south, Mrázovce in the west and on a short stretch Miňovce and Breznica in the north-west.

history

Monument to the Tokajík Tragedy

Tokajík was founded in the 1420s by a mayor under Wallachian law , was first mentioned in writing as Thokay in 1430 and belonged to the estate of Stropko. In 1567 the village was taxed at 1.5 porta and in 1582 at 2.5 porta. In 1767 the village came into the possession of the Vécsey family , and in the 19th century Larisch and Schonberg . In 1828 there were 26 houses and 204 inhabitants who were employed in forestry, agriculture and charcoal burning.

Until 1918, the place in Semplin County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia. During the Second World War , on November 19, 1944, 32 of 34 men were killed in retaliation by the Nazi German Sonderkommando for partisan support. b. V. 27 shot, the remaining population expelled and the village burned down except for the church and a house; the events went down in history as the Tokajík tragedy. After the war, Tokajík was rebuilt.

According to the 2011 census, there were 118 residents in Tokajík, including 112 Slovaks, two Russian and two Czechs and one Ukrainian. One resident made no statement. 99 residents supported the Greek Catholic Church, 15 residents the Roman Catholic Church and one resident of the Evangelical Church AB; one resident was of a different denomination. Two residents were without a denomination and the denomination of one resident was not determined.
