Veľká Domaša (Slovak: vodná nádrž Veľká Domaša ; German meaning "Large Domaša Reservoir", often just called Domaša ) is a reservoir in the north of Eastern Slovakia . It is located in the south sloping Ondauer Uplands ( Ondavská vrchovina ) and extends over the districts of Stropkov and Vranov nad Topľou in the Prešovský kraj .

The lake was created between 1962 and 1967 with the construction of the dam in the middle section of the 146.5 km long Ondava River and the subsequent flooding. The main function of the reservoir is flood protection. Especially in the snow melts and during prolonged rainfall in the catchment area of the Ondava and its tributaries south of the crest of the Low Beskid joined the river before the dam frequently overflowed its banks and flooded fertile farmland in the East Slovakian level , and on Bodrog and Tisza also areas in Hungary .

The water surface is between 14.2 and 15.1 km² (depending on the season / different sources). After the Gabčíkovo Reservoir , the Arwa Reservoir , the Zemplínska šírava and the Liptauer Reservoir, it is the fifth largest body of water in Slovakia and can be compared in terms of area with the Upper Austrian Mondsee , the Swiss Sempachersee or the Lower Saxony Dümmer .

The Veľká Domaša reservoir is 14 kilometers long and up to four kilometers wide in the southern part (between 500 and 1000 meters in the northern and central parts). The lake level is 156 meters above sea level, the maximum depth is 32.5 meters.

The diked Roman Catholic Church in the abandoned village of Kelča

For the construction of the reservoir, the villages of Dobrá nad Ondavou, Trepec, Kelča, Valkov and Petejovce were completely or partially abandoned, and the inhabitants of these places were relocated. For example, the municipality of Nová Kelča east of the reservoir was rebuilt in the 1960s. Only the baroque style Catholic church in the lost village of Kelča, built in 1780, still stands in its old place, below the lake level, with a semicircular dam around the church but still in the dry. In recent years the church building has deteriorated.

The reservoir is one of the most popular holiday areas in Slovakia. In summer the clear water reaches temperatures of up to 23 ° C. In addition, the lake is a popular fishing spot. The fish species found in Veľká Domaša are mainly carp , pike , pikeperch , catfish and hazel .

There are six resorts by the lake: Dobrá, Poľany and Vaľkov on the west bank, the municipalities Holčíkovce , Nová Kelča and Turany nad Ondavou on the east bank. There are numerous hotels, guest houses and campsites available for weekend or long-term vacationers. The reservoir is connected to the national road network via trunk road 15, which leads from Svidník to Vranov nad Topľou .

One and a half kilometers south of the dam, the Ondava is dammed again. The 1500 meter long and approx. 200 meter wide lake is called Malá Domaša (Small Domaša Reservoir) and acts as a compensation basin. The municipality of the same name Malá Domaša and the municipality of Slovenská Kajňa are located on this lake .
