Vyšná Olšava (1973-1980 and until 1948 "Vyšná Olšava"; Hungarian Felsőolsva - until 1907 Felsőolcsva ) is a municipality in the north- east of Slovakia with 640 inhabitants (December 31, 2019), which for Okres Stropkov , a circle of Prešovský kraj heard.
geography
The village is located in the Ondavská vrchovina mountainous region within the Low Beskids , in the valley of the Olšavka river in the Ondava catchment area . The center of the village is at an altitude of 219 m nm and is 11 kilometers from Stropkov .
Neighboring communities are Šandal in the north, Nižná Olšava in the east and south-east, Kručov and Fijaš in the south, Matovce in the south-west and Okrúhle in the north-west.
history
Vyšná Olšava was first mentioned in writing in 1382 as Elsewa , other historical names are Olsua (1391), Felsew Elswa (1394), Ilswa (1410), Felsew Olswa (1474) and Wissní Olssawy (1808). It first belonged to the Čičava Castle estate, and in 1493 to the Makovica Estate ; in the same year there were 11 farms, eight of which were abandoned. In the 18th century the village was owned by the Dessewffy family and other families. In 1715 the village had 34 abandoned and 22 inhabited households, in 1828 there were 56 houses and 449 inhabitants who were employed as woodcutters and farmers.
Until 1918, the place in Semplin County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia. During the period of the first Czechoslovak Republic, the main sources of income did not change. After the Second World War, part of the population worked in industrial plants in the nearby town of Stropkov.

According to the 2011 census, Vyšná Olšava had 602 inhabitants, including 538 Slovaks , 27 Roma , 20 Russian and one Ukrainian . 16 residents did not provide any information on ethnicity .
497 residents supported the Greek Catholic Church, 65 residents the Roman Catholic Church, 18 residents the Orthodox Church and four residents the Evangelical Church AB. The denomination of 18 residents was not determined.
