Veľkrop (Hungarian VELKO - until 1907 Veľkrop ) is a municipality in the north- east of Slovakia with 245 inhabitants (December 31, 2019), which for Okres Stropkov , a circle of kraj Prešovský belongs.

The village is located in the Ondavská vrchovina mountain range within the Low Beskydy Mountains , in the source area of ​​the Vojtovec brook . The center of the village lies at an altitude of 297  m nm and is 14 kilometers from Stropkov .

Neighboring municipalities are Makovce in the north, Havaj in the northeast and east, Varechovce in the southeast, Solník in the south, Breznička in the southwest, Chotča in the west and Bukovce in the northwest.

history

Veľkrop was first mentioned in writing in 1408 as Folkrophaw . The settlement is said to have been founded around the turn of the 14th to the 15th century, but it is unclear whether it was under German or Wallachian law. Ve derkrop was part of the Stropkov territory from its founding until the 17th century. In 1557 a mayor and 13 Wallachian subject families lived in the village. In 1567 households were taxed at 2.5 Porta .

From 1767 Veľkrop was owned by the Vécsey family and in the 19th century by the Ružičkoví family . In 1828 there were 36 houses and 280 inhabitants who were employed as charcoal burners, farmers and forest workers.

Until 1918, the place in Semplin County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia. In the period after 1945 the agricultural production cooperative was established in 1959, and part of the population worked in industrial plants in Stropkov and Svidník .

According to the 2011 census, Veľkrop had 215 inhabitants, of whom 133 were Slovaks , 34 Roma and Russians each and seven Czechs . Seven residents did not provide any information about their ethnicity .

119 residents professed to the Orthodox Church, 73 residents to the Greek Catholic Church, 11 residents to the Roman Catholic Church and one resident each to the Seventh-day Adventists and the Apostolic Church. Three residents had no denomination and seven residents had no denomination.

  • War cemetery from the First World War southeast of the town with 8,662 buried soldiers of the Austro-Hungarian and Russian armies. After eight years of renovation, the cemetery was opened to the public again at the end of September 2018.
