Brusnica (until 1927 Slovak "brusnica"; Hungarian Borosnya - until 1907 Brusnyica ) is a municipality in the north- east of Slovakia with 392 inhabitants (December 31, 2019), which for Okres Stropkov , a circle of kraj Prešovský belongs.
geography
The village is located in the Ondavská vrchovina mountains within the Low Beskydy Mountains in the Brusnička valley , a tributary of the Ondava . The center of the village lies at an altitude of 191 m nm and is nine kilometers from Stropkov .
Neighboring municipalities are Stropkov in the north, Kolbovce in the northeast, Jakušovce in the east, Krišľovce in the southeast, Tokajík in the south and Breznica in the west.
history
Brusnica was mentioned in writing for the first time in 1408 as Prensincz and at that time belonged to the territory of Stropkov. The name probably derives from the presence of cranberries (Slovak brusnica ) in the area from. In 1598 15 porta were recorded. Several Russian families settled in the village in the 17th century. In the 18th century Brusnica came under the rule of the Barkόczy family . In 1828 there were 56 houses and 430 residents who were employed as shepherds and forest workers, and until 1945 there was a saw that had around 20 employees.
Until 1918, the place in Semplin County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia.

According to the 2011 census, Brusnica had 417 inhabitants, including 316 Slovaks , 47 Russians , 33 Roma and three Ukrainians . 18 residents did not provide any information on ethnicity.
172 residents supported the Greek Catholic Church, 153 residents the Orthodox Church, 65 residents the Roman Catholic Church, three residents the Evangelical Church AB and one resident of the Jehovah's Witnesses. Six residents had no denomination and the denomination of 17 residents was not determined.
