The castle was founded at the beginning of the 14th century. The owners were members of the (Upper) Hungarian branch of the Drugeth family . At the beginning of the 16th century it was greatly expanded and rebuilt, but a short time later it burned down after the conquest by Johann Zápolya . In 1684 the castle was occupied by Emmerich Thököly . Since Rákóczi's defeat by the Habsburgs in 1711, the castle had been in ruins. Today only the high walls and a defense tower are preserved.
